This Is the Best Time to Renew Global Entry — and How to Do It
Renewing your Global Entry can save you a considerable amount of time and hassle when traveling, but knowing the best time to renew and the steps to follow is crucial to ensure continuous coverage. The best time to renew your Global Entry is approximately one year before it expires. This gives you ample time to go through the process without a gap in your membership, considering that the renewal can take a few months due to processing delays.
For those unfamiliar, Global Entry is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) program that allows expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travelers upon arrival in the United States. Members bypass traditional lines and use automated kiosks at select airports.
Here’s how to renew your Global Entry:
1.Check Your Expiration Date: Log in to the Trusted Traveler Program (TTP) website to see when your Global Entry will expire. Start the renewal process one year before this date.
2.Submit Your Renewal Application Early: Navigate to the TTP website and complete your renewal application. You’ll need to update your personal information, employment history, and travel history.
3.Pay the Renewal Fee: As of my knowledge cutoff in 2023, the fee is $100 for a five-year membership renewal. Payment is submitted online through the TTP site during your application process.
4.Await Conditional Approval: After submitting your renewal application and fee, you will receive a notification of conditional approval or if further information is needed.
5.Interview (if necessary): Not all renewals require an interview. However, if prompted, schedule an interview at a Global Entry Enrollment Center. Bring necessary documents such as your passport and a second form of ID.
6.Approval and Receipt of New Card: Once approved, you will receive your new card in the mail with instructions on activating it within 30 days of receipt.
Remember that processing times can fluctuate greatly due to demand or government backlog; early application ensures you won’t be caught out by unexpected delays. Renewing your Global Entry during times when application numbers are typically lower—such as after major holiday seasons—can potentially result in quicker processing times.
Lastly, always keep an eye on any changes in the renewal process by checking for updates on the official CBP website or setup notifications within your TTP account to stay informed on any personal action items required for successful renewal.
