The many actors who played Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson
The legacy of Sherlock Holmes, the quintessential fictional detective created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, has been kept alive through numerous adaptations. This transcendent character and his companion, Dr. John Watson, left a profound imprint on popular culture. They have been portrayed by a multitude of actors across different mediums including stage, radio, film, and television.
On the silver screen, perhaps the most iconic portrayal of Sherlock Holmes was by Basil Rathbone with Nigel Bruce as his faithful companion, Watson. These actors starred in 14 films from 1939 to 1946, shaping the image of Holmes and Watson for a generation.
The enigmatic character was then brilliantly embraced by Jeremy Brett in the television series “Sherlock Holmes” (1984-1994), solidifying Brett’s place as the definitive Holmes for many enthusiasts. Notably, David Burke initially played Dr. Watson for the first series before Edward Hardwicke took over for subsequent seasons.
In more recent years, the BBC’s modernized take on the classic detective story brought us “Sherlock,” starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the eponymous detective and Martin Freeman as Dr. John Watson. Their chemistry revitalized the characters for a digital age audience from 2010 to 2017.
Parallel to this modern adaptation was CBS’s “Elementary,” giving us yet another contemporary version of Holmes portrayed by Jonny Lee Miller with Lucy Liu breaking traditional molds as Joan Watson. This fresh take on the duo ran from 2012 to 2019.
In film, Robert Downey Jr. put on Sherlock’s hat and pipe with Jude Law at his side as Dr. Watson in the action-oriented renditions directed by Guy Ritchie (2009’s “Sherlock Holmes” and its sequel in 2011).
Other notable Sherlocks include Douglas Wilmer and Peter Cushing who both interpreted the sleuth in BBC series during the 1960s. In terms of cinema’s early days, Arthur Wontner was praised for his intelligent portrayal in five films during the early 1930s.
Ian McKellen also offered an unforgettable performance as an aged Holmes dealing with his mortality in “Mr. Holmes” (2015).
The list continues to grow as each generation discovers or rediscovers Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John H. Watson through old and new interpretations alike, ensuring that this legendary detective duo remains timeless in a constantly evolving world of storytelling.
