The BEST Stuffing (With Italian Sausage)
The holiday season is upon us and one dish that often takes center stage at the dinner table is stuffing. But if you’re looking to elevate this classic side dish, incorporating Italian sausage into the mix might just be your ticket to flavor town.
Italian sausage is known for its savory herbs and spices that complement the traditional ingredients of stuffing. The rich, herby taste enhances the depth of the bread, aromatics, and broth, creating a mouthwatering fusion that’s bound to impress your guests.
To make the BEST stuffing with Italian sausage, you’ll need:
Ingredients:
– 1 lb of Italian sausage (casings removed)
– 1 large loaf of day-old bread (preferably sourdough or ciabatta), cut into 1-inch cubes
– 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter
– 1 large onion, finely chopped
– 2 celery stalks, finely chopped
– 3 cloves of garlic, minced
– 1 teaspoon of fresh sage, chopped
– 1 teaspoon of fresh rosemary, chopped
– 1 teaspoon of fresh thyme leaves
– 2 cups chicken or turkey broth
– Salt and pepper to taste
– Optional: 1/2 cup of dried cranberries or chopped apple for a touch of sweetness
Instructions:
1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Spread the bread cubes on a baking sheet in one layer and toast in the oven for about 10 minutes until they are golden brown but still slightly soft in the center.
2. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the sausage, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon until it’s browned and cooked through. Once done, remove it from the pan and set it aside on a plate.
3. Using the same skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add onions and celery and sauté until softened – about 5 minutes. Add garlic, sage, rosemary, and thyme and continue to cook for another minute until fragrant.
4. In a large mixing bowl, combine toasted bread cubes, cooked sausage, onion mixture – ensure even distribution. If you want to add dried cranberries or apples for some sweetness now is the time.
5. Slowly pour chicken or turkey broth over the mixture in batches while gently folding everything together so that all ingredients are moistened.
6. Season well with salt and pepper to taste.
7. Transfer your mixture into a greased baking dish and cover tightly with aluminum foil.
8. Bake covered at 350°F (175°C) for about 25 minutes. Then remove foil and continue baking for another 20 minutes until crisp on top.
9. Serve warm alongside your main dish.
This Italian sausage stuffing isn’t just reserved for Thanksgiving; it’s perfect for any celebratory meal where you want something hearty yet sophisticated on your table.
