Ranking The DCEU Movies From Worst To Best
The DC Extended Universe (DCEU) has taken fans on a rollercoaster ride of superhero highs and lows. Here, we rank the DCEU movies from worst to best based on their storytelling, critical reception, and fanbase reactions.
Worst: Suicide Squad (2016)
While it intended to showcase DC’s villains-turned-anti-heroes, “Suicide Squad” suffered from a disjointed plot and poor character development. Despite an all-star cast and an Oscar for Makeup and Hairstyling, it sits at the bottom of our list.
Justice League (2017)
Plagued by production challenges and a change in directors, the theatrical cut of “Justice League” disappointed many with its inconsistent tone and rushed narrative. However, it did bring together iconic characters such as Batman, Wonder Woman, and The Flash.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)
This ambitious crossover event faced criticism for its dark tone and overstuffed plot. Nevertheless, Ben Affleck’s portrayal of Batman and Gal Gadot’s debut as Wonder Woman are among the highlights.
Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
Sequels often struggle to match their predecessors, and “Wonder Woman 1984” was no exception. Its lengthy runtime and less impactful villain didn’t live up to expectations even with its vibrant ’80s aesthetic.
Man of Steel (2013)
“Man of Steel” offered a modern take on Superman’s origin story. While divisive due to its darker depiction of the character, it set the foundation for the DCEU with Henry Cavill stepping convincingly into the role of Kal-El.
Aquaman (2018)
Jason Momoa’s “Aquaman” delivered an undersea spectacle full of action. Though critiqued for some over-the-top moments, it was a box office success that expanded the DCEU’s horizons – quite literally into the depths of the ocean.
Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) (2020)
This colorful explosion features Margot Robbie reprising her role as Harley Quinn. It’s praised for its unique style and emphasis on female empowerment, albeit with a niche appeal.
Shazam! (2019)
With its lighthearted approach and family-friendly humor, “Shazam!” was a breath of fresh air in the DCEU slate. Zachary Levi shone as the childlike hero proving that not all superhero movies need to be grave affairs.
Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021)
The much-demanded Snyder Cut provided closure for many fans who longed for Zack Snyder’s original vision. Released on HBO Max, it offered a more coherent storyline with improved character arcs over four hours.
Best: Wonder Woman (2017)
“Patty Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman,” stands at the pinnacle, offering an inspiring blend of heart, action-packed sequences, and powerful performances, especially by Gadot. It became both a critical darling and a fan favorite while promoting diversity in superhero cinema.
Though these rankings are subjective, they reflect general perceptions within DCEU fandom. Looking ahead, we can hope that future installments will build upon successes while learning from past missteps.
