PC Operating Temperatures: How Hot Is Too Hot?
As PC enthusiasts, one of the most important factors we have to consider when building, upgrading, or maintaining our machines is temperature. The standard operating temperature for most modern CPUs and GPUs is around 80-85°Celsius (176-185°Fahrenheit). Generally, it’s best to stay within 70-80°Celsius (158-176°Fahrenheit) to avoid any potential damage or instability.
When it comes to the other components in our PCs, such as RAM, storage drives, and power supply, there is no specific operating temperature range. The reason is that these components do not generate as much heat as the CPU and GPU, and they have different performance characteristics and tolerances. However, we should aim to keep them at a reasonable temperature to prevent any degradation or malfunction.
So, what happens if our PC gets too hot? The answer is simple: thermal throttling, and potentially, hardware failure. Thermal throttling is a safety mechanism that reduces the CPU’s clock speed and voltage to lower its temperature, thus decreasing performance. This means that our PC will slow down, and we may experience lag, stutter, or even crashes. Now, the question is, how can we keep our PCs cool and avoid overheating? The solution is also simple: proper cooling and monitoring.
