Mac Won’t Boot or Start? How to Fix Issues With a Mac Not Turning On
Mac computers are reliable devices, but like any other gadget, they can also have problems. One of the most common issues that Mac users face is when their computer won’t start or boot up. This can be a frustrating experience, especially if you depend on your Mac for work or personal use. However, there are a few solutions that can fix the problem.
Check the Hardware
Before trying out any software solutions, check the hardware first. Make sure that the Mac is connected to a power source and that the power cord is working correctly. Check the power outlet and plug the cord into a different outlet to ensure that power is flowing to the computer. If you’re using a MacBook, make sure that the battery has enough charge.
If everything with the hardware checks out, move onto the software solutions.
Reset the PRAM and SMC
Sometimes, the problem could be with the Mac’s system management controller (SMC) or parameter random-access memory (PRAM). Resetting these can solve boot-up issues.
To reset the PRAM, hold down the Command, Option, P, and R keys altogether while turning on the Mac. Keep holding the keys until the computer restarts and you hear the startup chime twice.
To reset the SMC, shut down the Mac and then hold down the Shift + Control + Option keys and the power button for about ten seconds. Release the keys and power on the Mac.
Single-User Mode
If your Mac is still not booting up after resetting the PRAM and SMC, try booting it up in single-user mode. This mode starts up the Mac with a minimal set of features and can fix boot-up problems.
First, hold down the Command + S keys while turning on the Mac. This should take you straight to single-user mode. Once you’re there, type in “fsck -fy” and press Enter. This will fix any issues with the startup drive. After the process finishes, restart the Mac by typing “reboot” and press Enter.
Reinstall macOS
If none of the above methods worked, try reinstalling the macOS. This requires a working internet connection and may take several hours to complete. First, power on the Mac and hold down the Command + R keys. This will take you to macOS Recovery Mode. From there, select “Reinstall macOS” and follow the prompts to complete the installation.
