It Was A Great Date – Until He Admitted He Was In Love With My Best Friend
It was shaping up to be one of those magical evenings that you only ever see in movies. The kind of night that makes you believe in the whimsy of city lights and the unpredictable serendipity of life. As I sat across from him, it was hard not to get lost in the moment and let myself imagine a blossoming future together. We had effortlessly floated through dinner; the conversation never once faltering and fits of laughter punctuating our exchanges.
We walked through the park, hands barely touching, almost electric with every unintentional graze. The stars seemed to shine for us alone, and in a giddy daze of near-perfect romance, I found myself spinning into fantasies about what might come next for us.
But then, as we settled on a nearby bench, he took a deep breath – like he was about to unload a secret he’d been burdening for far too long. My heart raced with anticipation; this was it—the moment when he would express his feelings and we’d leap together into this new chapter.
Only, what fell from his lips wasn’t the declaration I had been yearning for. “I think I need to be honest with you,” he began, his voice wavering just slightly as if trying to stay firm against a tide of emotion. “I’m here with you tonight, and it’s been incredible. You’re amazing and kind—and I enjoy every moment we spend together.”
I could feel my smile wavering as my mind raced through all possible scenarios that didn’t end with ‘but’. “But,” he continued, almost inaudibly, “I’ve realized I’m in love with someone else.” My heart sank; it felt like someone had just cut the strings on the beautiful balloon of our evening—it was plummeting back down to earth at lightning speed.
He didn’t stop there though; oh no, fate had one more cruel twist in store for me: “It’s your best friend.”
The night air suddenly felt bitter cold as those words echoed in my mind. All at once I knew the piercing truth – this great date was nothing but a prelude to a confession that shattered it all to pieces.
