Is Your iPhone’s Auto-Brightness Driving You Crazy? Here’s How to Fix It
It’s happened to us all; you’re using your iPhone, be it during a sunny day or in a dim room, and suddenly the screen brightness shifts – often not in the way you want it to. Auto-brightness, a feature designed to conserve battery life by adjusting the screen brightness based on ambient light conditions, sometimes seems to have a mind of its own. If you find your iPhone’s auto-brightness more irksome than helpful, here’s how you can take control.
Turning Off Auto-Brightness:
First things first, you can disable auto-brightness if it doesn’t suit your preferences. Just follow these steps:
1. Open ‘Settings’ on your iPhone.
2. Scroll down and tap ‘Accessibility.’
3. Under ‘Vision,’ tap ‘Display & Text Size.’
4. Scroll to the bottom and deactivate ‘Auto-Brightness’ by toggling the switch off.
With this setting turned off, your iPhone will no longer automatically adjust its screen brightness, leaving it entirely up to you.
Manually Adjust Brightness:
Control Centre is your quick-access screen for changing brightness among other settings.
1. Swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen (or up from the bottom if you have an iPhone with a Home button).
2. Look for the brightness slider which is represented by a sun icon.
3. Drag the slider up or down to adjust the brightness to your liking.
Using Siri:
You can even ask Siri to adjust your screen brightness for you.
1. Activate Siri by holding down the Home or Side button, or by saying “Hey Siri” if you have that feature enabled.
2. Simply say something like “increase brightness” or “turn down brightness,” and Siri will do it for you.
Schedule Night Shift:
If harsh blue light at night is what troubles you, enable Night Shift mode – which adjusts the display colors to the warmer end of the spectrum – rather than fiddle frequently with brightness settings.
1. Go to ‘Settings’ and tap ‘Display & Brightness.’
2. Tap ‘Night Shift.’
3. Here, you can schedule a time for Night Shift to turn on automatically or manually enable it until the next day.
True Tone Display:
For iPhones equipped with a True Tone display (iPhone 8 and later), make sure this feature is turned on.
1. Head over to ‘Settings’ -> ‘Display & Brightness.’
2. Enable ‘True Tone’ by toggling the switch on.
True Tone technology dynamically adjusts white balance based on ambient light, which can reduce eye strain in various lighting conditions.
Remember, personal preference is key when it comes to screen brightness—what works well for some doesn’t necessarily mean it will be comfortable for everyone. If auto-brightness isn’t accommodating your visual needs, these steps should help put screen illumination squarely under your control once again!
