How to Wrap a Dog’s Shoulder: 11 Steps
If your dog is suffering from a shoulder injury or requires extra support due to a medical condition, it’s crucial to know how to wrap their shoulder properly. A well-wrapped shoulder can provide support and stability, preventing further injury while your dog heals. Follow these 11 steps to ensure your furry friend’s comfort and safety during the recovery process.
1. Gather materials: You’ll need a roll of vet wrap or an elastic medical bandage, gauze padding, scissors, and adhesive tape.
2. Calm your dog: Ensure your dog is calm and relaxed. If needed, ask someone to help hold your pet in place or provide treats as a distraction.
3. Examine the shoulder: Check for any swelling, redness, or signs of infection before starting the wrapping process. Consult your veterinarian if you notice anything unusual.
4. Start with gauze padding: Place a piece of gauze across the top of the dog’s shoulder blade, covering the highest point of their shoulder joint.
5. Begin wrapping: Hold the end of the bandage underneath the gauze padding on top of the shoulder. Begin wrapping the bandage around your dog’s left shoulder (or right if it’s injured) counterclockwise.
6. Keep it snug but not tight: Ensure that the bandage is secure but not so tight that it restricts blood flow or causes discomfort for your dog.
7. Wrap in a figure-eight pattern: After wrapping once around the shoulder blade, loop the bandage under the left armpit (or right if that side is injured) and then cross over the chest towards the opposite armpit, creating a figure-eight pattern.
8. Secure under opposite armpit: Once you have reached the other armpit, repeat step 7 by looping under this armpit and crossing over the chest back to the injured shoulder.
9. Wrap around the chest: Continue wrapping in the figure-eight pattern, making sure the bandage is secure across the chest and under both armpits. Finish by wrapping around the dog’s chest multiple times to ensure stability.
10. Cut and secure: Cut off any excess bandage after wrapping it under each armpit for a final time. Secure in place with adhesive tape, making sure it doesn’t stick to your pet’s fur.
11. Monitor your dog: Keep an eye on your dog’s behavior and check for any signs of discomfort, swelling or restricted movement. If necessary, adjust or rewrap the bandage accordingly.
Consult with your veterinarian before attempting to wrap your dog’s shoulder and follow their advice to ensure proper care. Remember that proper wrapping can aid in a speedy recovery while providing comfort to your pet during this challenging time.
