How to Wire an Electric Dryer: 6 Steps
Step 1: Gather Necessary Tools and Materials
Before you begin wiring your electric dryer, gather all the necessary tools and materials. You will need a screwdriver, wire stripper, electrical tape, dryer cord with at least four-prong plug, four-wire cable (if not already present), and a dryer receptacle.
Step 2: Turn Off the Power Supply
For your safety, turn off the power supply before starting your project. Find the electrical panel in your home and locate the appropriate circuit breaker that corresponds to the dryer. Switch it off to disconnect power to the space where you will be working.
Step 3: Remove Cover Plate on Dryer Terminal Block
Locate the terminal block on your electric dryer, usually found at the back of the machine. Unscrew and remove the cover plate using a screwdriver to expose the inner wiring. Be cautious as any exposed metal could still hold an electric charge even if power is turned off.
Step 4: Connect Dryer Cord
Take the new dryer cord you purchased and attach it to the terminal block. The individual cord wires should be aligned with their corresponding terminals – red with red (L1), black with black (L2), white with white (neutral), and green with green (ground). Using a screwdriver, secure each wire.
Step 5: Install Dryer Receptacle
For this step, install a four-pronged dryer receptacle matching your cord configuration in an electrical box nearby at a height of about two feet above ground level. Strip about half an inch of insulation from each wire in the four-wire cable connecting it to your electrical panel. Attach these wires to their respective terminals in the back of the newly-installed receptacle following L1, L2, neutral, and ground configuration.
Step 6: Double-Check Your Work and Restore Power
Before reassembling and turning the power back on, double-check all your connections to ensure proper wiring. Tighten any loose screws and secure each terminal with electrical tape as necessary. Replace the cover plate on the dryer terminal block, then switch the circuit breaker back on and carefully test your electric dryer for proper functioning.
By following these six steps, you’ve successfully wired an electric dryer. Make sure to follow safety protocols at all times, and if in doubt about anything, call a professional electrician to assist you.
