How to Wipe a Mac Clean
Wiping a Mac clean is the process of erasing all data from your computer’s hard drive, returning it to a factory-fresh state. This can be useful if you’re selling or donating your Mac, or simply want a fresh start. In this article, we’ll guide you through the process of wiping your Mac clean step by step.
Before You Begin
Before you start the process, it’s crucial to back up any important documents, photos, or files that you want to keep. You can do this using an external hard drive or a cloud-based service like iCloud or Google Drive.
Step 1: Deauthorize iTunes (or Apple Music)
If you’ve used iTunes or Apple Music on your Mac, it’s important to deauthorize your computer before wiping it clean. This will allow you to authorize another computer in the future. To do this:
1. Open iTunes or the Apple Music app.
2. From the menu bar at the top of the screen, choose Account > Authorizations > Deauthorize This Computer.
3. Enter your Apple ID and password when prompted and click Deauthorize.
Step 2: Sign Out of iCloud
Signing out of iCloud ensures that no personal data is left on your Mac. To sign out:
1. Click on the Apple logo in the top left corner of your screen.
2. Choose System Preferences > Apple ID.
3. Select Overview in the sidebar and then click Sign Out.
Step 3: Sign Out of iMessage
To sign out of iMessage:
1. Open the Messages app.
2. From the menu bar at the top of the screen, choose Messages > Preferences.
3. Click on iMessage and then click Sign Out.
Step 4: Erase Your Hard Drive
Now that you’ve signed out of all accounts and backed up your data, it’s time to erase your Mac’s hard drive.
1. Restart your Mac by clicking on the Apple logo in the top left corner and choosing Restart.
2. As your Mac restarts, hold down the Command (⌘) and R keys to enter macOS Recovery Mode.
3. Once in Recovery Mode, choose Disk Utility from the macOS Utilities window, then click Continue.
4. In Disk Utility, select your Mac’s main hard drive (usually named “Macintosh HD”) from the sidebar.
5. Click on Erase at the top of the Disk Utility window.
6. Choose a format for the drive – APFS for newer Macs (2017 or later) or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) for older models. You can also name your drive if you’d like.
7. Click Erase to begin the process.
Step 5: Reinstall macOS
After erasing your hard drive, you’ll need to reinstall macOS:
1. Go back to the macOS Utilities window by quitting Disk Utility (select Disk Utility > Quit Disk Utility).
2. Choose Reinstall macOS and follow the on-screen prompts to complete the installation.
That’s it! You’ve now successfully wiped your Mac clean, and it’s ready for a fresh start or a new owner.
Note: If you are selling or giving away your Mac, it is recommended that you also unpair any Bluetooth devices such as keyboards, mice, or trackpads before wiping your computer.
Happy wiping!
