How to Wear an N95 Face Mask
Protecting yourself and others from the spread of airborne particles, including viruses and bacteria, is essential in today’s world. The N95 face mask is a reliable option for safeguarding your health. Regarded as one of the most effective masks available, the N95 mask provides a high level of filtration. In this article, we will learn how to wear an N95 face mask correctly to maintain its effectiveness.
Step 1: Choose the Right N95 Mask
Before you put on an N95 mask, you should ensure you’ve chosen the right one for you. The mask should be approved by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and bear a “TC” certification number. Also, verify that your mask is designed for single use only.
Step 2: Inspect the Mask
Before wearing, check the N95 mask for any signs of damage or soiling. Ensure that the straps are intact and not stretched, torn, or otherwise damaged. If any damage is detected, discard it, and obtain a new one.
Step 3: Wash Your Hands
Before touching your face or handling your mask, ensure that your hands are clean by washing them with soap and water or using hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol content for at least 20 seconds.
Step 4: Position the Mask
Hold the N95 mask with both hands by placing your fingertips around the edges of the mask’s dented side. The top panel should be on top while positioning it over your nose. Ensure that the nose clip is facing upwards.
Step 5: Put on the Mask
Place one hand on each strap and pull them over your head. First, take a strap in each hand and secure it at the base of your head just below your ears with one strap. Next, move your hands up to position another strap near the crown of your head.
Step 6: Mold the Nose Strip
Using two fingers, firmly press down on the nose clip to ensure a tight seal around your nose. Position your fingers from the bridge of your nose to its sides, ensuring no gaps exist between your skin and the mask.
Step 7: Check for a Comfortable and Snug Fit
Conduct a proper seal check by placing both hands over the mask and exhaling forcefully. Re-adjust the straps or mold the nose strip as needed if you notice any air leakage around the mask edges.
Step 8: Removal and Disposal
To remove your N95 mask, never touch its front portion, which could be contaminated. Instead, pull the straps up and over your head to remove it. Dispose of the used mask in a closed trash bin, and wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water or use hand sanitizer.
By following these steps, you can properly wear and maintain an N95 face mask for optimal protection against airborne pathogens. Remember that wearing an N95 mask is only one part of maintaining proper respiratory hygiene; frequently washing hands and practicing social distancing is also crucial to staying safe during these times.
