1. Choose the right size: Before putting on your karate gi, it is essential to choose the appropriate size that fits you comfortably. Consider your current weight and height, and consult the sizing chart provided by the manufacturer.
2. Unfold the gi: Spread out your karate gi on a flat surface, making sure there are no wrinkles or creases in the material. This will help you find the correct way to put it on.
3. Put on the pants: Start by putting on your gi pants first. Step into them, positioning their waistband just above your hips. Adjust them accordingly, ensuring that they are not too tight nor too loose.
4. Tie the drawstring: Once your pants are on, tie the drawstring securely so that they don’t slip down during practice or competition. Ensure that the knot is tight but also comfortable enough for unrestricted movement.
5. Put on the jacket: With your pants secure, put on your karate gi jacket, slipping one arm in at a time. Make sure to put on the correct side of the jacket; traditionally, the left side should be over the right side of your chest.
6. Close the jacket: Pull each side of your jacket together in a cross pattern across your chest, with the left side firmly overlapped over the right side.
7. Prepare your belt: Hold one end of your belt against your navel and wrap it around yourself twice (for kids) or once (for adults). The belt should pass over and under itself both times, so it wraps around twice without twisting or tangling.
8. Tie your belt: After wrapping yourself twice with the belt, you should have two equal lengths of belt hanging down in front of you. Take these two ends and cross them over each other (left over right), then tuck the top end under both layers of belt, pulling it all the way through.
9. Finish the knot: Complete your square knot by pulling both ends of your belt in opposite directions, ensuring that it is tight and secure. Adjust your belt so it lies flat across your stomach, with no twists or bulges along its length.
10. Double-check the fit: Make sure your gi fits properly before beginning practice or competition. The pants should have enough slack to allow for high kicks, and the jacket should allow for a full range of arm motion.
11. Maintain your gi: After each use, fold and store your karate gi properly to help preserve its shape and longevity. Wash it according to manufacturer instructions – usually in cold water – and hang it up to dry rather than using a tumble dryer. Regular washing will help keep your gi looking crisp and professional.
