How to Use the NuvaRing: 13 Steps
The NuvaRing is a small, flexible vaginal ring that releases hormones to provide contraception. It is an effective and convenient birth control method for many women. Here are 13 steps on how to use the NuvaRing correctly:
1. Consult your doctor: Before starting any new birth control method, it’s important to discuss your options with your healthcare provider. They can help you decide if the NuvaRing is right for you.
2. Obtain a prescription: The NuvaRing requires a prescription in most countries. Visit your healthcare provider for an evaluation and to obtain a prescription if appropriate.
3. Read the instructions: Familiarize yourself with the instructions provided in the NuvaRing packaging, which contains detailed information on proper usage.
4. Determine the start date: Choose a date to begin using the ring based on your menstrual cycle and your doctor’s guidance. You can either insert it on the first day of your period (Day 1 method) or on any day between days two and five of your menstrual cycle (Quick Start method).
5. Wash your hands: Before handling or inserting the ring, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water to prevent infection.
6. Remove the ring from packaging: Carefully open the foil pouch containing the NuvaRing and take it out, holding it between your thumb and index finger at opposite sides.
7. Check for damage: Inspect the ring to ensure there are no visible defects or damage that might affect its efficacy.
8. Insertion technique: Find a comfortable position, such as standing with one leg raised, squatting, or lying down with knees bent up. Using your free hand, part your labia and slowly insert the folded ring into your vagina as far as possible while maintaining comfort.
9. Ensure proper placement: Gently push the ring further in using your index finger until it is no longer noticeable and sits comfortably in your vaginal canal.
10. Leave the ring in place: Keep the NuvaRing in place for 3 weeks (21 days) with uninterrupted use to ensure proper contraception. The hormones slowly release, preventing ovulation and thus pregnancy.
11. Remove the ring: To remove the NuvaRing after three weeks, hook your index finger under its edge and gently pull it out of your vagina. Dispose of it in a safe manner, such as wrapping it in toilet tissue and placing it in a trash receptacle.
12. Menstruation: You will most likely experience a period within the next week after removing the ring.
13. Start a new ring: Insert a new ring after one week (7 days) of not having a ring inside, regardless of whether you’ve completed your period or not. This completes one cycle and begins another.
Remember always to consult your healthcare provider if you encounter any issues or have concerns about using the NuvaRing. Additionally, it is essential to note that the NuvaRing does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs), so using condoms remains necessary if STI protection is needed.
