How to Use Curl Rods: 14 Steps
Step 1: Get the Right Size Curl Rods
Choose curl rods that are the appropriate size for the type of curls you desire. The smaller the rod, the tighter the curl; the larger the rod, the looser the curl.
Step 2: Wash Your Hair
Start with clean hair. Wash your hair using your regular shampoo and conditioner routine.
Step 3: Dry Your Hair Slightly
Gently towel-dry your hair to remove excess water until it’s damp but not dripping wet.
Step 4: Apply a Leave-in Conditioner
Prep your hair by applying a leave-in conditioner or mousse. This will help create smoother curls and provide extra hold.
Step 5: Divide Your Hair into Sections
Divide your hair into manageable sections using hair clips or ponytail holders. Start with four sections and work from there depending on your hair thickness and length.
Step 6: Choose a Starting Point
Choose a starting point in one of the sections. You can start at the front of your head and work towards the back, or vice versa.
Step 7: Apply an End Paper
Place an end paper on the ends of a small section of hair (about 1 inch wide). This will prevent frizzing at the ends and help maintain a smooth curl.
Step 8: Start Rolling
Hold a curl rod horizontally, parallel to your head. Place its tip under the end paper and start rolling your hair around the rod, moving steadily towards your scalp.
Step 9: Secure Curl Rod in Place
Once you reach your scalp, bend both ends of the curl rod down to secure it in place. Ensure there is enough tension to keep your hair wrapped tightly around it.
Step 10: Continue Rolling Additional Sections
Repeat steps 7-9 for all other sections of hair until every strand is on the curl rod.
Step 11: Wait for Your Hair to Dry
Allow your hair to dry naturally or use a hooded dryer set on low heat. The drying time varies depending on your hair type and thickness.
Step 12: Unravel the Curl Rods
Carefully unbend the ends of each curl rod to release the tension, then gently unwind your hair off the rods one at a time.
Step 13: Separate the Curls
Use your fingers to gently separate and loosen the curls. Avoid brushing through them as this will cause frizz.
Step 14: Style and Finish
Finish styling your curls with a light hold hairspray or serum to maintain their shape and reduce frizz. Enjoy your gorgeous curls!
