How to Use an Iron: 8 Steps
Ironing clothes can be a bit intimidating if you have never done it before. Whether you’re a beginner or just need a refresher, these eight steps will teach you how to use an iron and help you achieve wrinkle-free garments.
1. Gather your supplies: To begin, you’ll need an iron, an ironing board, distilled water, a spray bottle for water, and a clean cloth.
2. Set up your ironing area: Place the ironing board in a well-lit area with enough space around it for maneuvering. Unfold and adjust the height of the board, so it is comfortable to work on while standing up.
3. Preheat the iron: Plug in the iron and set it on its heel. Adjust the temperature dial according to the fabric of your garment (check the care label for guidance). Wait for a few minutes until the iron heats up – most irons will have an indicator light that turns off when it’s ready.
4. Fill the iron with water if necessary: If your iron has a steam function, carefully use a measuring cup or funnel to fill the reservoir with distilled water. Avoid overfilling and ensure that the water level is within the designated lines.
5. Dampen your garment: Lightly mist the garment with water from your spray bottle or dampen it slightly by spreading a clean cloth moistened with water over it.
6. Begin ironing: Position your garment onto the ironing board, placing one section flat against the surface at a time. Begin gliding the iron slowly over that section without applying much pressure, working from top to bottom and following any seams or creases as guides.
7. Apply steam or more water if needed: If your garment has stubborn wrinkles or is made from heavy fabric, use steam or spritz more water onto the area and apply additional pressure with the iron. Make sure to test a small inconspicuous area first, as some fabrics may be damaged by direct steam.
8. Hang or fold your freshly ironed clothes: Once you’re finished ironing a garment, hang it on a hanger or fold it neatly. Allow the fabric to cool down for a few minutes before wearing or packing it away.
By following these eight steps, you’ll be well on your way to properly using an iron and achieving crisp, well-maintained clothing. As with any new skill, practice makes perfect, so don’t be discouraged if you struggle at first. With time and patience, ironing will become second nature.
