How to Use Advair
Advair is a combination of two medications, fluticasone and salmeterol, that helps people manage asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). By following these 15 steps, you can ensure you are using Advair safely and effectively.
1. Obtain a prescription: Visit your doctor to discuss your symptoms and obtain a prescription for Advair if necessary.
2. Choose the correct device: Advair comes in two forms: Diskus (a dry powder inhaler) and HFA (a metered-dose inhaler). Your doctor will recommend the best option for you.
3. Read the instructions: Familiarize yourself with the medication guide that comes with your Advair device.
4. Check the Advair device: Before using it for the first time, inspect the device for any damage. If it appears damaged, contact your pharmacist or healthcare provider.
5. Prepare the device: For Diskus, open the cover by sliding it away from the mouthpiece until it clicks. For HFA, remove the cap from the mouthpiece and shake well for five seconds.
6. Exhale completely: Before taking a dose, breathe out fully to empty your lungs.
7. Position the Diskus or HFA: Hold your Advair device horizontally with your hand at the base and your thumb firmly gripping one side.
8. Inhale deeply and steadily: With your mouth on the mouthpiece, take a deep breath in through your mouth to draw the medication into your lungs.
9. Hold your breath: After inhaling, hold your breath for approximately 10 seconds or as long as you comfortably can before exhaling slowly through pursed lips.
10. Clean up and close the device: For Diskus, close the cover by sliding it back to its original position until it clicks shut. For HFA, wipe the mouthpiece with a clean, dry cloth and replace the cap.
11. Rinse your mouth: After using the Advair device, rinse your mouth with water (and spit it out) to help prevent irritation and fungal infections.
12. Do not wash or submerge your Diskus or HFA in water, as this will damage the device. Simply clean the exterior with a dry cloth.
13. Keep track of doses: Your Advair inhaler will indicate how many doses are remaining; make note of it and inform your healthcare provider when the number becomes low to refill your prescription.
14. Store the device properly: Store your Advair device at room temperature (between 68-77°F or 20-25°C) and away from direct sunlight, heat, and moisture.
15. Maintain regular checkups: Visit your doctor regularly to monitor your asthma or COPD, review your inhaler usage technique, and adjust medications as needed.
By following these steps diligently, you’ll be equipped to maintain control over your asthma or COPD using Advair safely and effectively. As always, consult with your healthcare provider if you have any concerns about using Advair or experience any side effects.
