How to Use a Manual Can Opener: 10 Steps
Step 1: Choose the right can opener
There are various types of manual can openers available in the market. Choose one with a sturdy handle and sharp blade for easier and safer usage.
Step 2: Clean the opener
Before using the can opener, ensure it is clean and free of debris. This will not only make it more comfortable to use but also help prevent contamination.
Step 3: Wash the top of the can
Before opening, clean the top of the can, as dust and bacteria can accumulate there. Rinse with water and wipe with a clean cloth or sponge.
Step 4: Position the can opener
Place the cutting wheel of the opener on top of the can’s lid, aligning it with the edge. The wheel should be in contact with the inner rim.
Step 5: Clamp onto the can
With a firm grip on the handle, press down so that the cutting wheel pierces through the lid. Make sure that both handles are held closely together, and your hand remains stable.
Step 6: Rotate around the edge
Using your other hand, rotate the manual can opener’s handle in a clockwise direction. The cutting wheel will move along the inner rim of the lid as you maintain steady pressure on both handles.
Step 7: Continue until complete
Keep rotating until you have cut along with the entire circumference of the lid. You should hear a slight change in sound or resistance when you’ve completed one full rotation.
Step 8: Remove the lid
Gently lift away from the partially cut lid using a knife or fork. Be careful not to come into contact with any sharp edges as you remove it from atop of your well-opened can.
Step 9: Transfer contents smoothly
Pour out or scoop out your canned goods without touching any sharp edges by using proper utensils. Hold your can opener in one hand and your plate or container in the other hand.
Step 10: Dispose of the lid carefully
Always dispose of sharp lids or cans properly. You can use a small plastic bag, wrap it in a cloth, or place it in a designated tin can for safe disposal. This prevents injuries and accidents.
By following these ten steps, you will not only open cans with ease but also ensure safety and cleanliness throughout the process. Mastering the art of using a manual can opener is an essential life skill that is both practical and cost-effective.
