How to Test an Ignition Coil: 14 Steps
Step 1: Gather Necessary Tools and Materials
To test an ignition coil, you will need a multimeter, spark plug tester, insulated pliers, screwdriver, and a wire brush.
Step 2: Turn off the Engine
Before testing the ignition coil, ensure that the engine is turned off for safety.
Step 3: Locate the Ignition Coil
Find the ignition coil in your vehicle; it should be near the engine’s distributor or spark plug wires.
Step 4: Disconnect the Spark Plug Wires
Using insulated pliers or gloves, carefully disconnect the spark plug wires from the ignition coil. Make sure to note their positions so they can be reattached correctly later.
Step 5: Remove the Ignition Coil
Unscrew and remove the ignition coil from its mounting bracket.
Step 6: Inspect for Physical Damages
Examine the ignition coil for signs of damage or wear such as cracks or burn marks. If visible damage is present, it may be necessary to replace the coil.
Step 7: Clean Ignition Coil Contacts
Using a wire brush, gently clean any rust or corrosion from the contacts on both ends of the ignition coil.
Step 8: Set Up Multimeter
Set your multimeter to test for resistance (ohms). Consult your service manual for specific resistance values that indicate a functioning ignition coil.
Step 9: Measure Primary and Secondary Coil Resistance
Place one probe on each end of the primary and secondary coils (usually marked with P and S). Record your readings and compare them with reference values from your service manual. If readings are out of range, it may indicate a faulty coil.
Step 10: Reattach Ignition Coil
Mount the ignition coil back onto its bracket by screwing it into place securely.
Step 11: Reconnect Spark Plug Wires
Reconnect the spark plug wires to the ignition coil, ensuring they are in their correct positions.
Step 12: Test for Spark
Attach the spark plug tester to one of the spark plug wires. Start the engine and observe if a spark occurs. If no spark is present, it could be an indication of a faulty ignition coil.
Step 13: Test All Other Spark Plugs
Repeat Step 12 for all remaining spark plug wires to confirm if they are functioning properly.
Step 14: Evaluate Results
If your ignition coil passed the tests with appropriate resistance readings and a visible spark, it is most likely functioning correctly. However, if you observed issues during testing or your vehicle continues to have problems, consult a professional mechanic for further assistance.
