How to Tape Handlebars: 13 Steps
Taping handlebars might seem like a daunting task, but with the proper technique and a little patience, you can easily transform your bike and enhance your cycling experience. Follow these 13 steps to perfectly tape your handlebars.
1. Gather your materials: You will need a fresh roll of handlebar tape, scissors, electrical tape, and bar-end plugs. Optional items include rubber finishing bands and handlebar gel pad inserts for added comfort.
2. Remove old tape: If you’re re-taping handlebars, first remove the old tape by unwrapping it from the bars. Be sure to also remove any adhesive residue left behind.
3. Clean the handlebars: With a clean cloth or alcohol wipes, thoroughly clean the surface of your handlebars, ensuring there is no dirt or residue remaining.
4. Install gel pads (optional): If you’ve opted for gel pad inserts, now is the time to apply them to the handlebars according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
5. Starting point: Begin taping at the end of the drop bars, leaving about half an inch of tape hanging off the end.
6. Secure with bar-end plug: Tightly wrap the tape once and then insert the bar-end plug into the end of the drop bar, securing both the plug and loose end of tape inside.
7. Wrap tightly and evenly: Begin wrapping the tape around your bars by moving from inside to outside in tight and even layers at a slight diagonal angle. Overlap each layer by about one-third to half of the width of the tape.
8. Wrap around brake levers: When you reach a brake lever or shifter clamp, wrap around it in such a way that it looks seamless when looking down on the handlebars. You might need to loop over and then under before continuing onto wrapping.
9. Maintain tension throughout: Keep a consistent tension on the tape while wrapping to prevent gaps and provide a comfortable grip.
10. Wrapping the tops: When you reach the top part of your handlebars, wrap in the same direction as on the drops. This will ensure that your hands naturally tighten the tape when riding.
11. Finishing touch: Once you’ve reached the desired endpoint for your tape, cut it at a diagonal angle so that it lines up with the edge of your handlebars or stem.
12. Secure with electrical tape: Wrap the end of the handlebar tape tightly with electrical tape, making sure to cover both the end of the bar tape and a small portion of the handlebar itself.
13. Add finishing bands (optional): If provided, slip rubber finishing bands over the electrical tape and position them where needed for a clean finish.
Now that your handlebars are freshly taped, you’re ready to hit the road in style and comfort!
