How to Sprout Lentils
1. Choose the lentils: Begin by selecting high-quality, organic, and preferably unprocessed lentils. They should be whole and free from any contaminants.
2. Rinse the lentils: Thoroughly rinse the lentils under cold water. This will help remove any debris, dirt, and dust that may be present.
3. Soak the lentils: Place the rinsed lentils in a bowl or jar, completely cover them with water, and let them soak for at least 8-12 hours (or overnight). Add more water if needed to ensure they remain submerged.
4. Drain and rinse again: After the soaking time has passed, drain the water from the lentils and give them another good rinse under cold water.
5. Transfer to sprouting container: Move the soaked lentils to a sprouting container. A mason jar with a mesh lid or a sprouter designed specifically for sprouting seeds work well.
6. Cover with a breathable lid: Using a breathable lid or mesh cover, secure it over your sprouting container to avoid contamination while still allowing airflow.
7. Invert the jar: To allow excess water to drain out of your container, invert it at a slight angle so air can freely circulate around the soaked lentils. Place it on a dish rack or in a bowl to catch any drips.
8. Keep in a dark, cool spot: Place your sprouting setup in an area that is away from direct sunlight or heat sources, as this can cause spoilage or mold growth.
9. Rinse and drain daily: For 3-5 days, rinse and drain your lentils 2-3 times per day until you see little sprouts popping out of each one.
10. Enjoy your freshly-sprouted lentils: Use them in salads, soups, sandwiches, or as a healthy snack. Ensure you consume them within a week and store leftovers in a covered container in the refrigerator for prolonged freshness.
