Step 1: Choose the right paint
Select a spray paint specifically designed for plastics, as these adhere better and provide better coverage. Look for paints labeled “for plastic” or “plastic bonding.”
Step 2: Gather your materials
To spray paint plastic, you will need the following items: plastic object, plastic primer, plastic-friendly spray paint, fine-grit sandpaper, painter’s tape, gloves, and a face mask.
Step 3: Clean and prepare the surface
Wash the plastic item with warm soapy water to remove any dirt or oils. Rinse thoroughly and dry completely before moving on to the next step.
Step 4: Sand the surface
Use fine-grit sandpaper (220-400 grit) to lightly sand the plastic surface. This will help the primer and paint adhere better. Wipe off any dust with a clean cloth before proceeding.
Step 5: Apply painter’s tape
If there are areas on the object that you want to remain paint-free, cover them with painter’s tape to protect them during the painting process.
Step 6: Set up your work area
Find a well-ventilated area to work in, preferably outdoors or in a garage with windows open. Lay down drop cloths or newspapers to protect surrounding surfaces from overspray.
Step 7: Safety first
Put on gloves and a face mask to protect yourself from the fumes and avoid getting paint on your hands.
Step 8: Prime the object
Hold the primer’s nozzle approximately 12 inches away from the plastic surface. Apply a light coat of primer using sweeping motions. Allow it to dry according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Step 9: Sand again (optional)
For an even smoother finish, you can lightly sand the primed surface with fine-grit sandpaper. Wipe off any dust before proceeding.
Step 10: Shake the spray paint can
Shake the can of spray paint for at least one minute to ensure even coverage and good adhesion.
Step 11: Apply the first coat of paint
Hold the can approximately 12 inches away from the plastic surface and use smooth, sweeping motions to apply a thin, even coat. Allow this coat to dry for the amount of time recommended on the paint can.
Step 12: Apply additional coats (optional)
For more intense color or better coverage, apply additional coats of spray paint, allowing each to dry between applications.
Step 13: Remove painter’s tape (if used)
Once the final coat of paint is completely dry, carefully remove any painter’s tape that was used.
Step 14: Allow proper drying time
Allow the painted object to dry undisturbed for 24 hours to ensure a durable finish.
By following these steps, you can successfully spray paint plastic objects for a fresh new look or creative touch.
