How to Shrink a Wool Sweater
1. Read the label: Before attempting to shrink a wool sweater, it’s essential to read the garment’s care label. This ensures that you are not breaking any specific care instructions outlined by the manufacturer.
2. Prepare the supplies: Gather necessary items such as a bucket, cold water, mild detergent or baby shampoo, white vinegar and clean towels.
3. Fill the bucket with lukewarm water: Fill a bucket or sink with enough lukewarm water to submerge the sweater completely. Ensure that the water temperature is not too hot as it will damage the wool fibers.
4. Add detergent: Add a small amount of mild detergent or baby shampoo into the water and gently mix until it dissolves. The purpose of this step is to loosen up any dirt and grime on the sweater while keeping the fibers soft.
5. Soak the sweater: Place your wool sweater gently into the prepared soapy water mixture, pressing it down to fully submerge it. Allow it to soak for about 10 minutes.
6. Vinegar rinse: Drain the soapy water and refill the bucket with cold water mixed with one cup of white vinegar. Vinegar helps remove any remaining soap residue, eliminates odors, and restores natural pH levels in the wool fibers.
7. Swish and squeeze: Gently swish and squeeze your sweater in the vinegar solution for a few minutes. Be sure not to twist or wring it as this may cause stretching or damage to its shape.
8. Gently press out excess water: Remove your damp sweater from the bucket and lay it flat on a clean, dry towel. Roll up both the towel and sweater together, gently pressing as you go, to remove excess moisture.
9. Air-dry flat: Find a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight; lay out another dry towel or drying rack and spread your wool sweater flat on top. Reshape your sweater during this process if needed, and allow it to air-dry completely before wearing or storing.
By following these nine simple steps, you can shrink a wool sweater to your desired size and length without causing damage to its delicate fibers.
