How to Sew Oven Mitts: 14 Steps
1. Gather materials: To make oven mitts, you will need fabric for the outer layer and a heat-resistant material like Insul-Bright for the inside layer. You’ll also need quilt batting, bias tape, sewing thread, and a sewing machine.
2. Choose your pattern: You can find many free oven mitt patterns online or create your own based on the size and shape of your hand.
3. Cut your fabric: Cut two pieces of the outer fabric, two pieces of the Insul-Bright, and two pieces of the quilt batting according to your chosen pattern.
4. Create quilting layers: Layer each set of materials in this order from bottom up – Insul-Bright, quilt batting, and outer fabric (facing up). Pin the layers together to hold them in place while sewing.
5. Quilt layers together: Sew horizontal straight lines about an inch apart through all three layers. After you complete the horizontal lines, sew vertical lines with the same spacing to create a grid pattern.
6. Cut out thumb piece: After quilting the main body’s layers together, cut out a smaller thumb piece from the outer fabric, Insul-Bright and quilt batting—creating separate layered sections for more comfortable thumb movements.
7. Attach thumb piece to each mitt: Position the thumb piece on each mitt’s proper side and stitch it in place through all fabric layers.
8. Trim excess fabric: Trim any excess fabric away from each oven mitt’s edges using sharp scissors or a rotary cutter.
9. Create bias tape binding: Cut out long strips of fabric on a 45-degree angle across your chosen binding material—sew these strips together to make one continuous length of bias tape long enough to bind both mitts’ edges.
10. Attach bias tape to oven mitts: Start by folding the bias tape in half (wrong sides together) and pinning it along the oven mitt’s edges. Sew the tape into place, starting with a few inches at the mitt’s bottom edge and working your way around.
11. Turn the bias tape to the back: Once you’ve sewn the bias tape onto the front of each oven mitt, turn it to the backside, folding it over about 1/4 inch, concealing the raw edges of fabric underneath, and sew it into place.
12. Add a hanging loop: Cut a small piece of bias tape to create a loop for hanging your oven mitts. Fold each loop in half and insert it between the layers of bias tape at the top of each mitt before sewing it in place.
13. Secure your stitches: Reinforce your stitching by backstitching at both the beginning and end of all seams.
14. Trim threads and enjoy: Trim any loose threads from your finished oven mitts and enjoy your new homemade kitchen accessory!
With these 14 steps, you can create functional and stylish oven mitts that will be fit for use in your kitchen, or make beautiful and practical gifts for friends and family who love to cook or bake. Happy sewing!
