How to Sew an Invisible Zipper
Sewing an invisible zipper may seem like a daunting task for beginners, but with the right knowledge and tools, you can effortlessly create a professional-looking finish. In this article, we will explore step-by-step instructions for sewing an invisible zipper that remains hidden from view.
Materials Needed:
- Invisible zipper
- Fabric pieces
- Sewing machine
- Invisible zipper foot
- Thread (matching the fabric color)
- Scissors
- Pins
- Iron
Step 1: Prepare the Fabric and Zipper
Begin by laying out your fabric pieces, ensuring they are aligned correctly. Press the seam allowance where the zipper will be inserted using an iron. Open your invisible zipper and lay it flat with the teeth facing upward. Using the iron, gently press along the teeth to uncurl them, making it easier to sew.
Step 2: Position and Pin the Zipper
Place the opened zipper on one side of the garment’s seam allowance with its teeth facing down, matching it up with the pressed seam line. Ensure that the top edge of the zipper tape is aligned with the top edge of your fabric piece. Pin the zipper to the fabric, positioning the pins parallel to and approximately 1/4 inch away from the teeth.
Step 3: Attach an Invisible Zipper Foot
Remove your sewing machine’s standard presser foot and replace it with an invisible zipper foot. This specialized foot has two grooves underneath that make it simpler to sew close to your zipper’s teeth.
Step 4: Sew First Side of Zipper
Position your fabric and pinned zipper under the invisible zipper foot, ensuring that one groove lies over your zipper teeth while keeping them unzipped. Begin stitching from atop down towards the bottom of your zipper – following your machine manual to adjust stitch length and tension as needed. Stop sewing when you reach 1/2 inch from the end of the zipper and backstitch to secure.
Step 5: Sew Second Side of Zipper
Close the zipper, then align it with the second piece of your fabric. Ensure the seam lines and top edges match. Pin your zipper to the second side, just as you did with the first side. Reposition your fabric under the invisible zipper foot, this time setting the other groove over the remaining set of teeth. Sew from top to bottom, stopping 1/2 inch before the end and backstitching to secure.
Step 6: Finish Sewing Seam
After both sides of your invisible zipper are sewn, switch back to your standard presser foot. Starting below where you ended sewing the zipper, sew forward by a few millimeters, then backstitch to meet up with your zip stitches. Proceed sewing down along your seam, following your garment’s regular seam allowance.
Step 7: Press and Admire
Finally, carefully press along the seam line where you inserted the invisible zipper. This will help remove any visible bumps or wrinkles and make your zipper truly invisible.
And there you have it – a perfectly sewn invisible zipper that remains hidden from sight! With practice and patience, you’ll be able to elevate your garments’ appearance by incorporating this crucial sewing technique into your repertoire.
