How to Sew a Table Runner: 14 Steps
A beautifully sewn table runner can add elegance and style to your dining room or any other space in your home. Creating your own table runner is not only an enjoyable DIY project but also allows you to customize the design, fabric, and dimensions to fit your personal taste and home decor. Follow these 14 simple steps on how to sew a table runner.
1. Determine the dimensions: Measure the length and width of your table, then decide on the desired width and length for your table runner. A general guideline is to have at least 6 inches of overhang on each end of the table.
2. Choose your fabric: Pick a fabric that complements your home decor and is appropriate for the type of event or occasion where you’ll be using the table runner.
3. Purchase or gather materials: You will need fabric for the top and bottom sides, coordinating thread, a rotary cutter or scissors, a cutting mat, a sewing machine, pins or sewing clips, and an iron.
4. Wash and iron the fabric: Pre-wash your fabric according to its care instructions and iron it afterward to ensure a smooth and even surface when cutting and sewing.
5. Cut the fabric: On a clean, flat surface, cut two pieces of fabric (one for each side) according to the dimensions you determined earlier.
6. Pin or clip the fabric together: Place both pieces of fabric with right sides facing each other (wrong sides out) and secure them with pins or sewing clips around all four edges.
7. Mark your seam allowance: Use a ruler and erasable fabric pen or chalk to mark a 1/2-inch seam allowance around all four sides of the table runner.
8. Sew the pieces together: Starting at one corner with a 1/2-inch seam allowance, sew along three sides of the table runner using a straight stitch. When you reach the fourth side, leave approximately six inches open for turning the runner right side out.
9. Clip the corners: To reduce bulk and create a sharp point at each corner, trim away excess fabric and clip at a 45-degree angle, being careful not to cut into the stitched seam.
10. Turn the runner right side out: Gently push the fabric through the opening you left earlier, turning the table runner right side out. Use a tool like a point turner or chopstick to push out all four corners, ensuring they are well defined.
11. Press and iron: Lay your table runner flat and use an iron to press out wrinkles and creases, particularly around seams and corners.
12. Sew the opening closed: Fold under the raw edges of the remaining open section along the seam allowance line, aligning them with the sewn portion. Pin or clip and sew along the folded edge close to the seam using a straight stitch or hand-sew for a discreet finish.
13. Topstitch all four sides: To give your table runner a crisp, professional look, topstitch around all four edges, approximately 1/4-inch from the edge.
14. Press and iron once more: Give your finished table runner a final press with an iron to smooth out any remaining wrinkles and ensure its best presentation on your table.
Congratulations! You’ve just made your own sewn table runner. Admire your incredible workmanship as you proudly display it in your home or gift it to family and friends for special occasions!
