How to Sew a Comforter
Comforters are essential when it comes to snuggling in bed and keeping warm during cold nights. Sewing your own comforter adds a touch of personalization while potentially saving you money, and the process is not as difficult as you might think. In this article, we’ll explore the steps to create your own cozy and customized comforter.
Materials:
– Fabric (for the top and bottom layers)
– Batting (the filler for your comforter)
– Thread
– Sewing machine
– Scissors
– Pins
– Tape measure
– Ironing board and iron
Step 1: Choose Your Fabrics
Select fabrics that are comfortable, durable, and easy to maintain. You can choose from flannel, cotton or even sateen for your comforter’s top and bottom layers. Feel free to mix and match colors and patterns for a unique look.
Step 2: Measure and Cut Your Fabric Pieces
Determine the size of your comforter based on your mattress size (twin, full, queen or king). Add an extra 6 inches to both the width and length of the mattress size. This will ensure that the finished comforter adequately covers the bed.
For instance, if you’re making a queen-sized comforter, the typical measurements would be 90 inches by 90 inches plus 6 inches on either dimension. Cut two pieces of fabric (one for the top layer and one for the bottom) according to these measurements.
Step 3: Prepare Batting
Cut a piece of batting equal in size to your fabric pieces. It’s crucial you choose the right type of batting. Synthetic fiberfill or cotton batting are recommended options, but feel free to do some research based on personal preferences.
Step 4: Assemble Your Comforter
Place one piece of fabric right side up on a flat surface. Next, lay your batting evenly on top of this fabric, then place the other fabric piece right side down on top of the batting. Make sure all edges align. Your comforter is now assembled as a “sandwich”, with the two pieces of fabric on either side and the batting in the middle.
Step 5: Pin and Sew
Pin your layers together around the edges, keeping them smooth and wrinkle-free. Use a 1/2 inch seam allowance when sewing. Start at the middle of one long edge and sew towards one corner, pivot at the corner, then sew along the next edge until you reach the next corner. Repeat this process until you have sewn around three full sides and halfway down the fourth side.
Step 6: Turn and Close
Carefully turn your comforter right side out through the opening on the fourth side. Gently push the corners into shape and pat out any wrinkles so that both fabric layers lay smoothly over the batting.
Fold under 1/2 inch seam allowance along unfinished edges of fourth side (top and bottom). Pin it closed, ensuring that there are no open spaces left within these folded edges. Sew as close as possible to folded edges to close securely.
Step 7: Add Finishing Touches
Press your comforter with an iron to ensure a crisp finish, paying special attention to corners and seams for a professional look. Lastly, consider adding decorative elements such as quilting or appliqué for visual interest or personal touch.
There you have it – a step-by-step guide to sewing your very own comforter! While this process may take some time, it’s worth it for a soft, cozy addition to your bedding made entirely by hand.
