A homemade blanket is a cozy and thoughtful gift for yourself or a loved one, and it’s easier than you might think to sew one yourself. Just follow these 14 simple steps, and you’ll have a beautiful, warm blanket in no time.
1. Choose your fabric: Before you start sewing, decide on the fabric that you’ll use for your blanket. Fleece, flannel, and cotton are all popular choices because they’re soft and easy to work with.
2. Select the size: Determine the size of your finished blanket. You may choose from standard dimensions (such as twin, queen, or king) or customize the size according to personal preference.
3. Purchase materials: Once you’ve chosen your fabric and size, buy enough material to make your blanket. You’ll also need thread that matches the fabrics and any other necessary notions like pins or scissors.
4. Wash and dry the fabric: Before cutting and sewing, wash and dry your fabric according to the manufacturer’s recommendations to avoid shrinkage after the blanket is complete.
5. Cut the fabric: Measure and cut the fabric to your desired dimensions. Add an extra inch on each side for seam allowance.
6. Pin the pieces together: With the right sides of the fabric facing each other, pin around the edges of the two pieces, leaving an opening about 8 inches wide un-pinned for later turning.
7. Sew around the edges: Using a sewing machine or hand-sewing needle, sew around the perimeter of your blanket with a straight stitch about ½ inch from the edge of the material. Remember to leave an opening as mentioned earlier.
8. Clip corners: To ensure sharp corners when turning your blanket right-side-out, clip off any excess fabric at each corner being sure not to snip through your stitching line.
9. Turn right-side-out: Reach inside through the opening you left and gently pull the fabric through to reveal the right side of your blanket.
10. Press seams: Use an iron to press the seams flat, creating a professional-looking finish.
11. Topstitch: Close the opening by folding the seam allowances inwards, and then topstitch around the entire perimeter of your blanket, approximately ⅛ inch from the edge. This will also provide added durability to your blanket.
12. Decide on a quilting method (optional): If you’d like to add some extra texture or stability to your blanket, you can choose to quilt it. Hand-tie the layers together with yarn or thread, machine quilt with a simple design, or sew rows of straight stitches across the fabric.
13. Create a border (optional): You can add a decorative border or binding to give your blanket a polished look and prevent fraying.
14. Enjoy your handmade creation: Once you’ve completed these steps, you’ll have created a beautiful and cozy blanket that’s perfect for snuggling under or gifting to someone special!
With patience and practice, sewing your own custom blanket can be a rewarding project that leads to warm, comforting memories for years to come.
