How to Search for Comments on YouTube
Searching for specific comments on YouTube can sometimes be a bit of a challenge, especially if a video has garnered a large number of reactions. While YouTube doesn’t offer a direct feature to search comments by keywords, there are certain ways and workarounds you can use to find the comments you’re looking for.
First and foremost, when you’re on the YouTube video page whose comments you want to search through, start by sorting the comments. You have two options: “Top Comments” or “Newest First”. If you opt for “Top Comments”, you’ll see the comments that have received the most engagement, which might include likes and replies. If you’re searching for recent comments or responses to a recent event mentioned in the video, then sorting by “Newest First” is likely more beneficial.
If you’re looking for a comment that contains specific text, you can try using your browser’s search function. For desktop browsers like Chrome, Firefox or Edge, pressing “Ctrl + F” (or “Command + F” on Mac) to bring up the search box will allow you to enter specific keywords. The downside here is that the browser can only search the text that’s currently loaded on the page. Since YouTube loads comments dynamically as you scroll down, if the comment you’re looking for isn’t loaded yet, it won’t show up in your search.
Another method is using Google’s site-specific search function. You can go to Google.com and type in “site:youtube.com” followed by keywords from the comment and the name of the video or channel. This isn’t bulletproof since Google indexing may not be up-to-the-minute accurate for comments, but it can help narrow things down especially if the comment is older and has been indexed.
For mobile devices, unfortunately, there aren’t built-in functions like “Ctrl + F”. However, some browsers on mobile devices offer “Find in Page” features that can be used similarly once the comments are loaded. Alternatively, some apps and third-party tools claim they can help with searching YouTube comments directly but be cautious as they often require access to your YouTube account which could pose privacy and security risks.
Lastly, if there are other websites or forums discussing the specific video and its contents (like Reddit or dedicated fan forums), they sometimes curate or highlight particular YouTube comments within their discussions. It can be something of a long shot but checking these sites might also lead you to find what you’re looking for more quickly than sifting through thousands of direct responses on YouTube itself.
Finding a specific comment on YouTube isn’t straightforward and often requires a good deal of patience and luck due to current functionality limitations. However, using sorting features, browser search capabilities, Google site-specific searches or even engaging with community forums might just get you to the comment you’re seeking.
