How to Replace Awning Fabric
Awnings are a practical and attractive addition to any home, providing shade, protection from the elements, and even energy savings. However, over time, the fabric of your awning may wear out or become damaged due to exposure to the sun and weather. This guide will walk you through how to replace awning fabric for a fresh, updated appearance while maintaining the durability of your awning.
1. Gather Materials and Tools
Before starting, gather the necessary materials and tools:
– Replacement awning fabric
– Ladder
– Screwdriver
– Pliers
– Allen wrench (for retractable awnings)
– Garden hose (optional)
2. Safety First
Ensure your safety by choosing a calm day with no wind to work on replacing your awning fabric. Position your ladder securely against the wall or roof on which the awning is attached.
3. Detaching the Awning Fabric
Depending on the type of awning you have – manually operated or motorized – follow these steps:
Manually Operated Awnings:
a. Carefully extend the awning fully.
b. Remove any screws securing the valance at each end of the roller bar.
c. Slide out the valance.
d. Carefully roll up the awning halfway.
e. Remove any screws holding the main fabric in place.
f. Carefully slide out the main fabric from its track.
Motorized Awnings:
a. Switch off power to your motorized awning.
b. Extend the awning fully.
c. Remove any screws securing the valance at each end of the roller bar.
d. Slide out the valance.
e. Carefully roll up the awning halfway.
f. Use an Allen wrench to loosen any tension bolts or set screws in each end cap.
g. Remove any screws holding the main fabric in place.
h. Carefully slide out the main fabric from its track.
4. Cleaning the Awning Hardware
Before installing the new fabric, use a garden hose to clean the awning frame and hardware, removing any dirt and debris that may have accumulated.
5. Installing the New Awning Fabric
a. Carefully slide the new awning fabric onto the roller tube while ensuring it’s aligned with the roller tracks.
b. Ensure appropriate tension by guiding the leading edge of the fabric over the roller bar.
c. Smooth out any wrinkles in the fabric as you roll it up.
d. Align and attach each end of the valance to its corresponding support bracket with screws.
e. For motorized awnings, retighten any tension bolts or set screws that were loosened during removal.
6. Testing
Check your work by extending and retracting your awning fully to confirm that it operates smoothly and that there are no wrinkles in the fabric.
