How to Replace a Door Sill
Replacing a worn or damaged door sill can not only improve the overall appearance of your entryway but also protect your home from water and other external elements. In this article, we’ll walk you through the steps necessary to replace a door sill with ease.
Materials and Tools Needed:
– New door sill
– Pry bar
– Hammer
– Screwdriver
– Tape measure
– Circular saw or handsaw
– Wood chisel (if necessary)
– Drill and drill bits
– Deck screws or nails
– Wood putty
– Paint or stain (optional)
– Weatherstripping (optional)
Step 1: Remove the Old Door Sill
Begin by removing any weatherstripping around the base of the door frame. Next, use your pry bar and hammer to carefully remove the old door sill. Be cautious not to damage the surrounding floor or door frame during this process.
Step 2: Measure and Cut the New Door Sill
Measure the width and height of the existing door sill to determine the size of your new replacement. Mark these dimensions onto your new sill material, allowing for an additional 1/8 inch on each side for expansion. Using a circular saw or handsaw, cut along your marked lines.
If your new door sill comes with a factory-installed threshold, you may need to use a wood chisel to create notches in either end of the sill to accommodate it.
Step 3: Dry Fit
Place your new door sill into position beneath the door frame, ensuring it sits level and properly aligns with adjacent surfaces. If you’re satisfied with the fit, remove it once again in preparation for installation.
Step 4: Mounting Holes
Using a drill and appropriate bit, drill pilot holes through your new sill at various interval points along its length. This will help guide deck screws or nails during the installation process, preventing splits or cracks in the material.
Step 5: Secure the New Door Sill
Place your new door sill back into position and use deck screws or nails to secure it firmly to the subfloor. Be certain to drive your screws or nails straight and flush with the surface of the sill.
Step 6: Finishing Touches
Fill any nail or screw holes with wood putty, sanding smooth once dried. If you desire, paint or stain your new door sill to match your home’s décor. Reattach weatherstripping, if applicable.
Congratulations! You’ve successfully replaced a door sill. With these steps, you can maintain the beauty and durability of your entryway for years to come.
