How to Replace a Bicycle Tire
A flat tire can be a cyclist’s worst nightmare, but learning how to replace a bicycle tire can save you time, money, and a few headaches. With some patience and the right tools, you can easily change a bicycle tire and get back on the road quickly. Follow these simple steps to replace your bike’s flat tire.
1. Gather the necessary tools:
– A new bicycle tire
– A set of tire levers
– A bike pump or CO2 inflator
– A plastic or metal core valve tool (optional)
2. Remove the wheel from the bike:
– Shift your bike’s gears down to the smallest cog on the rear wheel and smallest chainring on the front wheel.
– Open the release lever on your bike’s quick-release system or loosen the bolt on wheels with solid axles.
– Carefully lift your bike frame off the wheel, and set it aside.
3. Deflate the tire:
– Completely deflate the remaining air in your flat tire by pressing down on the valve.
4. Remove the defective tire:
– Insert one of the tire levers under the edge of the defective tire, being careful not to pinch the inner tube.
– Securely hook one end of a second tire lever onto an adjacent spoke.
– Work around the circumference of the wheel with both levers until one side of the defective tire has been removed.
5. Remove inner tube (if applicable):
– Slide out inner tube starting from an opposite point of valve stem.
6. Inspect inner tube (if not using a tubeless system):
– Inflate your inner tube slightly and listen for air leaks, or feel around for escaping air.
If necessary, patch any holes located in inner tubes or replace them.
7. Check rim and inside of old tire for damage:
– Examine the rim for any sharp objects or debris that might have caused your flat.
– Inspect the inside of the old tire to locate and remove any foreign objects.
– If your rim tape is damaged, replace it to protect inner tubes in the future.
8. Install a new tire:
– Fit one side of the new tire onto the rim first, beginning at the opposite end of the valve stem hole.
– Partially inflate inner tube (if using a tube system) and insert it back into the new tire with valve stem going through valve hole.
– Starting at one side, slowly work the second side of the new tire onto the rim using both hands. Be cautious not to pinch inner tubes or damage your rim.
9. Inflate your tire:
– Attach pump head or CO2 inflator to valve stem and inflate to recommended pressure, as marked on sidewall of your new tire. Carefully remove pump head after reaching desired pressure.
10. Reinstall wheel onto bike:
– Align brake rotor or cogs with appropriate slots and carefully slide wheel back into place.
– Close quick-release lever or tighten solid axle wheel bolts. Ensure that brakes work smoothly before riding.
Congratulations! You’ve successfully replaced your bicycle tire and can now continue riding with confidence. Remember to regularly inspect your tires for wear, damage or proper inflation levels to prevent future flats and maintain a safe ride.
