How to Recycle Candles: 9 Steps
Candles are a versatile way to create a cozy atmosphere, provide lighting during a power outage, or add a punch of fragrance to your home. As candles burn down and near the end of their lifespan, you might feel guilty throwing away the remaining wax. Fear not – by recycling candles, you can reduce waste and create a brand new candle out of old ones. Here are nine steps to recycle your candles effectively:
1. Gather your supplies: Before you start, gather up the leftover candles you want to recycle, along with some other materials you might need such as a heat-resistant container or tin, scissors, wick material, tongs, and an old pot or double boiler.
2. Clean the candles: Remove any debris such as dust, debris or burnt wick from the leftover candle wax using scissors or your fingers.
3. Melt the wax: Break up the larger chunks of wax into smaller pieces to ensure they melt evenly. Melt the wax in an old pot or double boiler over low heat until it becomes liquefied.
4. Expect some variations: When recycling candles, note that mixing various types of wax may cause slight changes in texture and appearance. The wax’s hardness and burning time may also be affected if candle types vary—some are made from paraffin while others from bee or soy-wax.
5. Prepare your container: While waiting for the wax to melt, place a new wick in your chosen container for the recycled candle. Hold it in place using clothespins, pencils, or chopsticks laid across the opening.
6. Add color and fragrance: If you want to give your recycled candle an extra touch, add in some color using soap colorant or crayons when melting the wax. If available, mix scented oils into the melted wax before pouring it into the mold so that it achieves a consistent scent throughout.
7. Pour the melted wax: Carefully pour the melted wax into the container, making sure to not disturb the wick’s position. Use a towel or oven mitt in case you spill hot wax.
8. Allow it to cool: Let your recycled candle sit at room temperature for several hours until it has completely cooled and solidified. This may take longer for larger candles.
9. Trim the wick: Once the candle has hardened, trim the excess wick to about 1/4 inch above the surface using scissors.
By following these steps, you can enjoy an eco-friendly solution for recycling those old candles while creating new ones to enhance your home’s ambiance. Not only will the environment thank you but will also leave you with a sense of accomplishment and a lovely, handcrafted candle decor accent.
