How to Play Tetherball: 15 Steps
Tetherball is a fun, competitive game that has been a playground favorite for decades. It’s perfect for players of any age, and requires minimal equipment—a tetherball, a tall pole, and an open space. Here are 15 steps to help you learn how to play and enjoy tetherball.
1. Set up the tetherball court: First, ensure that you have the right equipment—a 10-foot-tall metal pole, tetherball, and rope. Find a flat area with enough space around the pole to provide a clear playing area without any obstructions.
2. Attach the tetherball: The rope should be approximately 10 feet long. Tie one end securely to the tetherball and the other end to the top of the pole.
3. Mark the playing area: Divide the playing area into two equal halves with a semi-circular line or imaginary boundary around the pole. The two halves are for each player.
4. Determine serving order: Flip a coin or use another method to choose who serves first in the game.
5. Position the players: Each player stands in their designated half of the playing area.
6. Serve the ball: The server holds the ball with their palm facing up and strikes it with their other hand in an underhand motion. The ball should travel around the pole to enter their opponent’s half.
7. Keep your hands on the ball: Both players can only touch or strike the ball with their hands, using either open palm or clenched fists.
8. Hit in one direction: Players can only hit the ball in one direction—clockwise or counterclockwise—as agreed upon at the beginning of each round.
9. Defending tactics: The non-server player can block or counter hits from their opponent as it enters their half by striking it in a different direction and trying to wind it back around towards their opponent.
10. Goal of the game: The ultimate goal is to wrap the rope completely around the pole in your chosen direction until the ball makes contact with the pole.
11. Forbidden moves: Players may not catch, throw, or hold the ball during play. Additionally, they cannot touch or lean against the pole while playing.
12. Scoring: A point is awarded when one player successfully wraps the rope completely around the pole (making contact with it). It’s common to play best two out of three or four out of seven points.
13. Switch sides: After each point, players switch sides of the playing area.
14. Rotate serves: The initial server alternates with every new game in a match to ensure equal chance for each player.
15. Enjoy the game: Remember that tetherball is meant to be fun and friendly competition—remember sportsmanship and enjoy yourself!
By following these 15 steps, you’ll be able to master tetherball and have an exciting time on the playground or in your own backyard!
