How to Play Spud: 5 Steps
Spud is a classic outdoor game that requires minimal equipment, friendly competition, and plenty of space to run around. If you’re searching for a fun activity that can be enjoyed by players of all ages, look no further. In this article, we’ll walk you through the five simple steps needed to start playing Spud.
Step 1: Gather the Required Materials
To begin playing Spud, all you need is a medium-sized ball and at least four players. A playground ball or a soft foam ball works best, as it’s easy to throw and catch. Make sure to choose an open area with enough space for all players to move around safely.
Step 2: Assign Each Player a Number
Before starting the game, each player should be assigned a unique number – this can be done simply by counting off. Someone needs to remember the numbers in case there are new players in this session. One person should also be designated as the person who starts with the ball.
Step 3: Start the Game
The designated person begins by holding the ball and calling out “SPUD” loudly while throwing it high into the air. As they loudly call out “SPUD,” all other players should immediately start running away from the thrower and the ball.
Step 4: Freeze!
Once the thrower catches or retrieves the ball after it has hit the ground, they should shout “FREEZE.” At this moment, all players must stop in place; no more running allowed! The thrower then chooses one of the frozen players as their target, quietly saying their assigned number to themselves.
Step 5: Throwing the Ball at Your Target
The thrower has one chance to hit their chosen target with the ball. They can take up to three giant steps towards their target before throwing. If the thrower successfully tags them with the ball before they move, the target player receives an “S” for their Spud score. The game continues with the targeted player now becoming the thrower, starting back at Step 3: Start the Game.
A player is out of the game once they collect all four Spud letters: S-P-U-D. The last player standing without a complete Spud score is declared the winner.
Remember that safety should always come first while playing. Be aware of your surroundings and avoid using overly hard balls that could cause injuries. With these straightforward steps in mind, you’re now well-prepared to enjoy a fun and lively game of Spud with your friends or family!
