How to Play Red Rover: 8 Steps
Step 1: Gather the players
The first step to playing Red Rover is finding a group of enthusiastic participants. Ideally, you want to have at least eight players for a proper game, with equal numbers on each team. This game works best with children and young adolescents.
Step 2: Establish boundaries
Find a suitable open space to play on, such as a grassy field or park. Set up two lines or markers approximately 10 to 20 meters apart, depending on the age and athletic abilities of the players. These lines will serve as boundaries for each team’s territory.
Step 3: Form two teams
Divide your group of participants into two teams with an equal number of players. Designate a team captain for each side, who will play a crucial role in organizing and leading their respective teams.
Step 4: Line up facing each other
Have each team line up along their designated boundary, holding hands or linking arms to form an unbroken human chain.
Step 5: Begin the game
Start playing by having one team captain call out “Red Rover, Red Rover, send [player’s name] right over!” They should specify the name of a player from the opposing team who they want to attempt a run.
Step 6: Send the selected player running
The selected player from the opposing team must run toward the chain formed by the calling team at full speed. Their objective is to break through one of the hand-holding links in the chain.
Step 7: Outcome determination
If the running player successfully breaks through a link, they can choose one member from that broken link to join their own team. On the other hand, if they fail to break through, they become a part of the calling team.
Step 8: Alternate turns
Continue playing Red Rover by alternating turns between each team’s captain calling out and sending players to run. The game ends when one team has captured all the players from the other side or when the players decide to stop playing.
Now that you know the 8 steps to play Red Rover, gather your friends and family and indulge in this classic outdoor game. It’s a fantastic way to promote physical activity, teamwork, and friendly competition among participants.
