How to Play Dreidel: 6 Steps
Step 1: Gather the Players and Materials
Before you can play dreidel, you’ll need at least two players (though more is always merrier!). Make sure all players have a dreidel, which is a four-sided spinning top with a Hebrew letter on each face (Nun, Gimel, Hey, and Shin). You’ll also need small items, such as coins or candy, to use as game tokens.
Step 2: Distribute the Tokens
Each player should start the game with an equal number of tokens. The amount may vary depending on your preferences but aim for around 10-15 tokens per player. Place a few tokens in the center pot – this will be the starting jackpot.
Step 3: Learn the Symbol Meanings
Each Hebrew letter on the dreidel has a specific meaning that dictates what action a player must take:
– Nun: Do nothing and pass the dreidel to the next player.
– Gimel: Take all tokens in the pot.
– Hey: Take half of the tokens in the pot.
– Shin: Add one token to the pot.
Make sure all players understand these meanings before beginning the game.
Step 4: Spin and Take Turns
Choose a player to go first and have them spin the dreidel. They’ll perform an action based on the Hebrew letter that’s facing up when the dreidel stops spinning. Continue playing clockwise around the table, with each player taking a spin.
Step 5: Keep Playing Until Tokens Are Gone
Play continues until one of two things happens:
1) A player has all of the tokens.
2) Players run out of their own tokens to contribute to the pot.
In either instance, declare that player as the winner.
Step 6: Get Creative and Have Fun!
Dreidel is a fairly simple game, but don’t hesitate to spice it up with creative house rules or festive decorations. Play with friends, family, or colleagues to celebrate the holiday season and have fun with this timeless Hanukkah tradition!
