How to Play Benchball: 8 Steps
Benchball, a fun and exciting team sport, combines elements of basketball, netball, and handball. As a game that encourages teamwork and strategy, it is perfect for schools, clubs, and social events. To get started with benchball, follow these eight simple steps:
1. Gather Your Equipment:
You’ll need a bench or row of chairs to serve as the target area (the “bench area”), a ball (usually a size 5 netball or similar), and an open area (either indoors or outdoors) with clearly marked boundaries.
2. Form Teams:
Split your group into two teams of equal numbers – aim for approximately 5-7 players per team. You can wear colored bibs or shirts to distinguish between the teams.
3. Establish the Bench Area:
Place the bench along one of the boundaries and allocate one player from each team as their team’s designated “bench player.” This player sits on the bench throughout the game and assists in scoring points.
4. Set Boundaries:
In addition to the bench area, set up four lines using cones or chalk: two sidelines, a centerline bisecting the field lengthwise, and an end line opposite the bench area.
5. Start of Play:
The game commences with one player from each team standing in the middle of the field. A “neutral” player or the referee throws a jump ball between these two players to determine which team gains possession.
6. Offensive Play:
Once possession has been established, players must pass the ball to their teammates while attempting to reach their bench player. Players are not allowed to run while holding the ball, only pass it. Bench players must remain seated but are permitted to lean or stretch out at arm’s length to receive passes that are otherwise out of reach.
7. Scoring Points:
When a seated bench player catches a pass from a teammate, a point is scored. The opposing team’s players return to their starting positions while the scoring team retains possession for the next play. Keep in mind that bench players cannot score points on their own – they must receive direct passes from their teammates.
8. Winning the Game:
The first team to reach a predetermined number of points, usually between 11-21, wins the game. If you want a shorter or longer game, simply adjust the target score.
Benchball is a versatile and engaging sport that promotes physical fitness, teamwork, and sportsmanship. By following these eight steps, you’re well on your way to mastering this thrilling game and sharing it with others.
