How to Paint Upholstery
Step 1: Choose the Right Paint
Select a suitable paint for your upholstery project. Fabric or textile paints work best as they are specifically designed for use on fabrics and won’t crack or peel.
Step 2: Clean the Upholstery
Before you begin, clean the upholstery thoroughly to remove any dirt, dust, or debris. Use a vacuum cleaner with an upholstery attachment and follow up with a damp cloth to remove any remaining dirt.
Step 3: Test Paint on a Hidden Area
Test the paint you’ve chosen on a hidden area of the upholstery to ensure it adheres well and gives the desired finish. If you’re satisfied, proceed with painting.
Step 4: Protect Your Work Area
Lay down a drop cloth to protect the surrounding area from paint splatters and spills.
Step 5: Tape Off Any Areas You Don’t Want to Paint
Use painter’s tape to mask off any areas you want to keep paint-free, such as trims and buttons.
Step 6: Apply a Fabric Medium (Optional)
If your paint requires it, mix in a fabric medium according to the manufacturer’s instructions. A fabric medium helps the paint bond better with the fabric and stay flexible once dry.
Step 7: Dampen the Fabric
Lightly mist the fabric with water using a spray bottle, dampening it evenly. This will help the paint spread more easily and blend smoothly.
Step 8: Apply the First Coat of Paint
Using a brush or foam roller, apply a thin and even layer of paint on the upholstery following the direction of the fabric grain. Work in small sections, painting from top to bottom.
Step 9: Allow the Paint to Dry
Let your first coat of paint dry completely before applying additional coats. This will usually take around two hours depending on your chosen paint’s drying time.
Step 10: Apply Additional Coats as Needed
Depending on the desired color and coverage, you may need to apply additional coats of paint. Be sure to let each coat dry completely before applying the next one.
Step 11: Seal the Paint (Optional)
If you want added durability and protection for your painted upholstery, consider using a sealant. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on how to apply it.
Step 12: Reassemble and Enjoy
Once your final coat of paint has dried and you’re happy with the results, remove any painter’s tape and reassemble your furniture. Now, enjoy your beautifully transformed upholstery!
