How to Paint Baseboards: 12 Steps
Step 1: Choose Your Paint
Start by selecting a high-quality paint appropriate for baseboards. Semi-gloss or satin finishes are commonly used as they are durable and easy to clean.
Step 2: Gather Your Supplies
You’ll need a drop cloth, painter’s tape, a paintbrush (angled brushes work best), a paint roller, a paint tray, sandpaper (180-220 grit), a vacuum, and a damp cloth.
Step 3: Clear the Area
Remove any furniture or obstacles near the baseboards to facilitate easy access and movement during the painting process.
Step 4: Clean the Baseboards
Before you begin painting, ensure that your baseboards are clean and free from dust and dirt. Vacuum the area thoroughly, then wipe down the baseboards with a damp cloth.
Step 5: Sand the Surface
To achieve a smoother finish and better adhesion, lightly sand the surface of your baseboards with sandpaper. Be sure to dust off any residue afterwards with a dry cloth or vacuum.
Step 6: Apply Painter’s Tape
Apply painter’s tape along the top and bottom edges of your baseboards, ensuring it adheres securely to protect against paint drips.
Step 7: Lay Out Your Drop Cloth
Place your drop cloth on the floor beneath the areas you’ll be painting to catch any potential spills or drips.
Step 8: Prepare Your Paint
Pour some paint into the paint tray and use the grooved section of the tray to even out the amount of paint on your roller or brush before applying it to the baseboards.
Step 9: Apply Primer (Optional)
If you’re painting over unfinished wood or very dark colors, consider applying a primer first. This will allow for more even, long-lasting coverage.
Step 10: Paint With Brush and Roller
Begin painting by applying the paint with your brush, following the grain of the wood. Use your roller to smooth out any brush strokes and achieve a more uniform finish. Depending on the coverage, you may need to apply two coats for optimal results.
Step 11: Remove Painter’s Tape
Once the paint has dried, carefully remove the painter’s tape to reveal your crisp, clean edges.
Step 12: Clean Up
Remove your drop cloth and dispose of it properly. Store or clean your brushes and rollers as required, and move furniture back into place.
And there you have it – freshly painted baseboards to rejuvenate and enhance your space!
