How to Open a DMG File in Windows
Have you ever received a DMG file from a friend or colleague who is using a MacBook, but you’re not sure how to open it on your Windows computer? Don’t worry. Even though DMG files are designed for Mac OS X, you can still open them on a Windows computer with a little bit of effort.
Method 1: Use a Third-Party Software
The easiest way to open a DMG file on Windows is to use a third-party software such as TransMac or HFSExplorer. TransMac is a paid software, while HFSExplorer is free.
Step 1: Download and install the software of your choice.
Step 2: Insert the DMG file into your Windows computer.
Step 3: Open the third-party software and look for the option to open the DMG file.
Step 4: Follow the prompts to extract the contents of the DMG file.
Method 2: Convert the DMG File to an ISO File
Another way to open a DMG file on Windows is to convert it to an ISO file, which is compatible with Windows.
Step 1: Download and install a software called DMG2IMG on your Windows computer.
Step 2: Open Command Prompt by pressing the Windows key + R, typing “cmd” and pressing Enter.
Step 3: Navigate to the folder where you downloaded the DMG2IMG file using the command “cd [directory]”.
Step 4: Type “dmg2img [filename.dmg] [filename.img]” and press Enter.
Step 5: Open the IMG file in a Virtual Drive software such as Virtual Clone Drive, which creates a virtual disk drive on your computer.
Step 6: The Virtual Drive software should prompt you to install the files on the drive.
Method 3: Use 7Zip to Extract the DMG File
You can also use 7Zip, a free compression software, to extract the contents of a DMG file.
Step 1: Download and install 7Zip on your Windows computer.
Step 2: Right-click on the DMG file and select “Open with 7-Zip.”
Step 3: Double-click on the DMG file from within the 7Zip window to access its contents.
Step 4: Extract the contents of the DMG file to a folder if needed.
