A properly fitted wheelchair is essential for the comfort and mobility of its user. To ensure the right fit, it’s important to know how to measure a wheelchair accurately. This article explains eight essential steps to measuring a wheelchair.
1. Determine Seat Width
To measure the seat width, have the user sit on a flat surface with their hips and thighs touching. Measure the widest part of their hips/thighs (whichever is widest) and add one inch for clearance. This figure will be the ideal seat width for the user.
2. Measure Seat Depth
Seat depth is measured from the back of the buttocks to the back of the knee, ensuring that there’s enough space between the edge of the seat and the user’s knees. Subtract one inch from this measurement to avoid pressure on blood vessels behind the knees.
3. Measure Back Height
To measure back height, have the user sit up straight against a wall with their legs flat on the ground. Measure from the base of their spine (right above their tailbone) to where their shoulder blades touch the wall. This will determine their backrest height, which should provide proper support without affecting freedom of movement.
4. Find Armrest Height
Armrest height is measured while sitting with elbows bent at a 90-degree angle and arms resting comfortably at their sides. Measure from where their elbow touches their forearm to the seat’s surface. This is the ideal height for armrests to support proper posture and alleviate pressure on wrists.
5. Confirm Leg Rest Length
Leg rest length is measured while sitting with feet flat on the ground, measuring from behind one knee to heel of a foot (if using full-length leg rests). If using footplates, add an inch or two to allow clearance from footplates when propelling wheelchair manually.
6. Determine Front Seat-to-Floor Height
The front seat-to-floor height affects stability and user ability to propel the chair independently. To measure this, have the user sit with their feet flat on the floor and measure the distance from the back of their knee to the floor. Subtract two inches for foot clearance.
7. Calculate Rear Seat-to-Floor Height
The rear seat-to-floor height determines how far a wheelchair tips back during use. It’s measured by finding the distance from the seat’s rear edge to the floor, adjusting for any slope. The ideal height should allow user’s feet to reach the floor while preventing tipping.
8. Measure Overall Width
Finally, it’s essential to measure overall wheelchair width, especially when navigating through narrow spaces like doorframes. Measure across the widest part of the wheelchair, including both wheels and handrails (if applicable). This will ensure that your wheelchair is appropriate not only for your body but also for your environment.
By following these eight steps, you’ll be able to accurately measure a wheelchair for optimal comfort and maneuverability. Always consult a medical professional or a wheelchair specialist before making any modifications or purchasing a wheelchair based on these measurements.
