Worry beads, also known as komboloi or begleri, are a popular Greek and Middle Eastern stress-relief tool. Traditionally used to help pass the time or cope with anxiety, worry beads gain even more appeal considering how simple they are to make. Follow this 8-step guide to create your very own worry beads.
1. Gather Your Materials
To get started, you will need the following:
– Beads: Choose a variety of shapes and sizes to your liking. Make sure the holes are large enough for your chosen cord.
– Cord: Nylon, silk, or cotton cord is ideal. Select a thickness that fits through your beads easily.
– Tassel: Pre-made tassels are available at craft stores, or you can create your own using embroidery thread.
– Scissors
– Ruler or tape measure
2. Measure and Cut the Cord
Decide on your desired length for the worry beads. Traditionally, Komboloi has 16-23 beads, while Begleri often contains only 2-10 beads. Measure the cord’s length by accounting for the beads’ spacing and any knots you plan to add. Cut it about twice the desired finished length, plus another 6 inches for tying off.
3. Thread Your Beads
Once you have cut your cord, begin threading your beads onto it. Experiment with different patterns or color combinations during this step, making sure that all your beads have enough space and slide smoothly along the cord.
4. Add Knots Between Beads (Optional)
If you want to secure each bead in place and prevent them from sliding around too much, make knots between each one. You might also find that adding knots greatly enhances the appearance of your worry beads.
5. Close the Loop
Once all the beads are threaded and arranged to your liking, tie both ends of the cord together with a secure knot, leaving an inch or two of cord at each end. This will form a completed worry bead loop.
6. Attach the Tassel
To attach the tassel, thread one end of the cord through its loop and position it at the base of the knot made in step 5. Secure it by tying another knot above the tassel, ensuring everything stays in place.
7. Trim Excess Cord
Once the tassel is securely attached, trim any excess cord. However, be careful not to cut too close to your knots, as this may cause them to unravel.
8. Enjoy Your Worry Beads
Now that your worry beads are complete, learn how to use them and benefit from their stress-relief and relaxation properties. Hold them in your hand and let the beads slide through your fingers or use them as decorative items within your home or office space.
