How to Make Rosehip Oil: 11 Steps
Rosehip oil is a natural and nourishing moisturizer that has been used for centuries to promote healthy skin. Extracted from the seeds of wild rose bushes, this oil contains essential vitamins and fatty acids that can help maintain soft, hydrated, and vibrant-looking skin. Making rosehip oil at home may seem like a daunting task, but in reality, it’s relatively straightforward. Follow these 11 steps to create your own high-quality rose hip oil.
1. Gather the materials
To make rosehip oil, you’ll need a few basic supplies:
– Fresh rose hips
– A carrier oil (such as jojoba, sweet almond, or grapeseed oil)
– A clean glass jar with a tight lid
– A mortar and pestle or food processor
– Cheesecloth or fine mesh strainer
– A dark-colored glass bottle for storing the finished product
2. Choose the right rose hips
The best rose hips for making oil come from wild roses, such as Rosa rubiginosa or Rosa canina. Look for firm, deep red or orange hips that have not yet been exposed to frost.
3. Harvest the rose hips
Once you find your ideal rose hips, snip them off the stem with a pair of sharp pruning shears. Ensure that you’re wearing gloves to protect your hands from thorns while harvesting.
4. Clean the rose hips
Wash the harvested rose hips under cold tap water to remove any dirt or debris.
5. Remove the seeds
Slice each hip in half and use a spoon or your fingertip to remove the hairy seeds in the center.
6. Dry the rose hip shells
Spread out cleaned and de-seeded shells on a clean towel or paper towel and allow them to air dry for at least 24 hours.
7. Prepare the carrier oil
Choose a high-quality carrier oil and measure out enough to cover the dried rose hip shells in the jar. The amount needed will depend on the size of your jar and the quantity of rose hips.
8. Grind the dried rose hips
Using a mortar and pestle or food processor, gently grind the dried rose hip shells into a coarse powder.
9. Combine with carrier oil
Pour the ground rose hips into the clean glass jar and add enough carrier oil to cover them. Seal tightly with a lid and shake well to combine.
10. Infuse for 4-6 weeks
Store your mixture in a cool, dark place and allow it to infuse for 4-6 weeks. Shake once a day to ensure proper mixing of oils.
11. Strain and store
After infusion is complete, strain the mixture through a cheesecloth or fine mesh strainer into a dark-colored glass bottle. Make sure to squeeze out as much oil as possible from the saturated rose hip pulp. Seal tightly with a lid and store your homemade rosehip oil in a cool, dark place, away from direct sunlight.
Now you have your very own nourishing rosehip oil! Use it daily as a moisturizer or add an extra boost of hydration in your skincare routine by incorporating it into DIY masks, lotions or balms. Enjoy its multitude of benefits for years to come.
