How to Make Roman Blinds
Roman blinds are an elegant and classic addition to any home’s decor. They provide a sophisticated look, while also offering privacy and light control. Making your own Roman blinds is not only a cost-effective way, but also allows you to customize the design and fabric choice to match your style. In this step-by-step guide, we will walk you through the process of making your own Roman blinds.
Materials Needed:
1. Fabric for the blind
2. Lining fabric (optional)
3. Measuring tape
4. Scissors
5. Tailor’s chalk or pencil
6. Sewing machine or needle and thread
7. Wooden dowels or plastic rods
8. Nylon cord
9. Eye hooks
10. Cleat
11. Velcro (hook and loop)
12. Wooden batten
Step 1: Measure Your Window
Start by measuring the width and length of the window where you plan to install the blind. Be sure to take accurate measurements as this will determine the size of your finished blind.
Step 2: Cut the Fabric
Using your window measurements, cut the main fabric and lining fabric (if using) adding an extra allowance for seams (approximately 1 inch on each side). Remember that your finished blind should be slightly smaller than the window frame to ensure smooth operation.
Step 3: Hem the Fabric
Fold and sew a hem on all four sides of both fabric pieces (main fabric and lining fabric), ensuring that they have straight edges.
Step 4: Join the Fabrics
Place the main fabric right-side down on a flat surface and place the lining fabric right-side up on top of it, aligning all edges properly. Sew them together along their top edge.
Step 5: Create Dowel Pockets
Decide on how many dowels you want in your blind – generally, one every 8-10 inches is ideal. Measure the distances between dowels and mark them on the lining side of the fabric. Fold the fabric at each mark and sew a pocket for the dowels, making sure it’s wide enough to fit the dowels or rods you’ve chosen. Leave one end open so you can insert them later.
Step 6: Insert the Dowels
Slide wooden dowels or plastic rods into each pocket on the lining side of your blind.
Step 7: Sew Eye Hooks and Nylon Cord
Calculate the appropriate spaces between eye hooks, based on dowel positioning on your blind. Attach eye hooks on every dowel pocket close to their open ends. Thread a nylon cord through the eye hooks, starting from the bottom dowel and working your way up to the top, leaving an extra length of cord to be secured to a cleat.
Step 8: Attach Velcro to Blind and Wooden Batten
Attach hook Velcro along the top edge of your blind (main fabric side). Screw a wooden batten into your window frame or wall above the window, and attach loop Velcro along its length. This will allow you to easily secure your blind in place.
Step 9: Hang Your Blind
Now all that’s left is to hang your Roman blind by attaching its Velcro strips to the wooden batten in your window. Pull and secure the nylon cord around a cleat for easy operation of raising and lowering your new Roman blind.
Congratulations! You’ve successfully made your own Roman blind! With this step-by-step guide, you can now create functional and fashionable blinds for every room in your home. The possibilities are endless as you tailor each design to suit your unique style and decor preferences.
