How to Make Origami Birds
Origami, the ancient Japanese art of paper folding, has fascinated people for centuries. One of the most popular origami creations is the bird, which can range from elegant swans to intricate cranes. In this article, we will explore how to make origami birds step by step. Whether you’re a beginner or have some experience with origami, these steps will guide you through creating a beautiful paper bird.
Materials needed:
– A square piece of origami paper (15 x 15 cm or 6 x 6 inches is ideal)
– A flat surface to work on
– Patience and focus
Step 1: Preparing the square
To begin, lay your origami paper on your work surface, color side down.
Step 2: Folding the diagonals
Fold the paper in half diagonally from corner to corner, forming a triangle. Then unfold it back to a square. Repeat this process for the other two corners, creating an X-shaped crease pattern on the paper.
Step 3: Folding into preliminary base
With the color side down, fold your paper in half horizontally and vertically so that it now resembles a smaller square with creases intersecting at its center. Open these folds again so that your paper lies flat.
Now pinch two opposing diagonal creases at their midpoint and bring them together while flattening your model into a triangle shape, known as the “preliminary base” in origami terms.
Step 4: Forming the bird base
Take one of the bottom edges of this triangle shape and fold it up to meet the top point. Repeat this action for both sides of your preliminary base so that it resembles a diamond shape when viewed from above.
Next, take each lower edge of this diamond and fold both flaps into the centerline simultaneously. They should create two small triangles. Finally, fold the top triangle down over these smaller triangles, completing what is known as the “bird base.”
Step 5: Shaping your bird
Now, it’s time to give your origami bird wings and a tail! Identify the pointy end of the bird base and fold one flap down at a 90-degree angle. This will serve as one of its wings. Flip your model over and repeat this step on the other side for its second wing.
For the tail, fold one of the remaining flaps up on either angle you prefer. You can create a display-worthy angled tail or keep it more modest by merely folding it upwards.
Step 6: Creating the head
Finally, fold down a small portion of your origami bird’s remaining pointy end to create its head and beak. Be creative with this step! You can experiment with different angles and folds to create unique bird faces.
