How to Make Easy Pants: 13 Steps
Step 1: Choose Your Fabric
Select a comfortable, lightweight, and durable fabric for your pants. Popular options include cotton, linen, or a blend of the two. Make sure you have enough material to make the pants and consider any additional fabric for pockets or waistbands.
Step 2: Take Your Measurements
Measure your waist, hips, inseam, and the desired length of your pants. Write down these measurements as you will need them for drafting your pattern.
Step 3: Draft Your Pattern
Create a simple pant pattern by following online tutorials or using premade patterns available at fabric stores. Adjust the pattern to fit your personal measurements.
Step 4: Cut Out the Pattern
Trace your pattern onto the fabric, making sure to leave enough seam allowance (typically 1/2 inch). Then, carefully cut out your pieces with fabric scissors.
Step 5: Pin the Fabric Pieces Together
Pin together the front and back pieces of each leg with right sides facing inward. This will help keep the material in place while sewing.
Step 6: Sew the Legs
Following the seam allowance guidelines on your pattern, sew along the inner leg seam on each pant leg. Be sure to start at the bottom edge and work your way up towards the crotch area.
Step 7: Attach Legs Together
With right sides still facing inward, pin and sew along the central crotch seam from one side of the waistband to the other. This will connect both legs together.
Step 8: Add an Elastic Waistband
Measure and cut a piece of elastic that comfortably fits around your waist. Sew a channel around the top edge of your pants wide enough for the elastic band to slide through easily. Use safety pins to attach one end of the elastic to itself as you thread it through the channel. Once in place, evenly distribute any gathers and sew the ends of the elastic together.
Step 9: Hem Your Pants
Turn your pants inside out and fold the bottom edges up to your desired length. Pin in place and sew a simple hem around each leg.
Step 10: Add Side Pockets (Optional)
If you want to add side pockets to your pants, cut out two pocket shapes from your fabric and attach them to the desired location on your pant legs before sewing the sides together in step 6.
Step 11: Press the Seams
To give your pants a polished look, use an iron to press the seams flat. This will help reduce bulk and create a crisp, finished appearance.
Step 12: Try on Your Pants
Slip into your newly crafted pants to ensure they fit comfortably and make any necessary adjustments. This step is crucial for achieving a tailored fit.
Step 13: Show Off Your Creation
