How to Make Distilled Water in 5 Simple Steps
Distilled water is water that has been purified through the process of distillation, resulting in a liquid that is free of impurities. It is commonly used for various household and scientific purposes due to its purity. Making distilled water at home is easy and can save you money. Here, we will guide you through five simple steps to make distilled water using readily available tools and appliances.
Step 1: Water source and heat-resistant container
– Start by collecting fresh tap water or any clean water source you have access to.
– Choose a heat-resistant glass or stainless steel container to hold the water for distillation.
Step 2: Heat the water
– Pour the collected water into a pot or saucepan and place it on the stovetop.
– Set the heat to medium-high and wait until the water starts boiling.
Step 3: Create a condensation surface
– As soon as the water starts boiling, place a heat-resistant glass or stainless steel bowl inside the pot, making sure it floats
– The floating bowl will serve as a surface for condensation to collect during distillation.
Step 4: Cover with a lid and add ice
– Once your bowl is floating comfortably in boiling water, cover the pot with an upside-down lid. Ideally, the lid should be concave, allowing for better collection of distilled water.
– Place ice cubes or cold packs on top of the inverted lid. This will cool down the surface and speed up condensation.
Step 5: Collect distilled water
– Maintain medium-high heat until you see condensation forming on the underside of the lid and
dripping back into the floating bowl.
– Continue boiling and replenishing ice, if needed, until you have collected enough distilled water.
– Carefully remove the floating bowl from the pot using heat-proof mitts or tongs. Allow it to cool before storing or using the distilled water.
By following these five simple steps, you can make distilled water at home for various purposes like cooking, watering plants, or filling a humidifier. These easy-to-follow steps will ensure that you have a pure and safe source of water without the need to buy bottled distilled water.
