How to Make Big Hair Bows: 12 Steps
Big hair bows have been a popular hair accessory for years, adding a touch of glamour and style to any outfit. They are perfect for special occasions and can be easily customized to match your outfit. With these simple steps, you can create your own big hair bows in no time.
1. Gather materials: For this project, you’ll need fabric of your choice, scissors, a ruler, a needle and thread or a sewing machine, an alligator clip or hair elastic, and optionally, a hot glue gun.
2. Choose your fabric: Pick out the fabric you want to use for your bow. Look for a stiffer material that will hold its shape well, like tulle, grosgrain ribbon, or thick satin.
3. Measure and cut: Measure out two rectangles of fabric: one larger piece (approximately 9 x 6 inches) for the main part of the bow and one smaller piece (approximately 3 x 1 inches) for the center band. Cut out both pieces.
4. Fold and sew: Fold the larger rectangle in half with the right sides together (pretty side facing inward). Sew along the long sides and one short side with a straight stitch, leaving one short side open for turning.
5. Turn right side out: Carefully turn the fabric right side out through the open end and use a pencil or chopstick to push out the corners.
6. Press seams flat: Use an iron to flatten the seams and give the bow a crisp appearance.
7. Create pleats: Pinch and fold the large rectangle accordion-style until it forms three pleats evenly spaced across the width of the bow.
8. Secure pleats with thread: Wrap thread around the center of the pleated bow a few times to hold it in place; knot securely and trim any excess thread.
9. Attach clip or hair elastic: Using a hot glue gun or needle and thread, attach the alligator clip or hair elastic to the back of the bow.
10. Prepare center band: Fold the short ends of the smaller fabric rectangle toward the center and press. Next, fold the rectangle in half lengthwise with right sides together and sew along the open edge.
11. Attach center band: Turn the center band right side out and wrap it around the center of the pleated bow, ensuring it covers thread and any visible attachment points for the clip or elastic. Secure with a few stitches on the backside of the bow.
12. Trim any loose threads: Clip any stray threads to give your big hair bow a polished finish.
Now you have a beautiful, handmade big hair bow that can be worn for any special occasion or even just to add a touch of style to your everyday wardrobe. Just repeat these steps for more bows in different colors, patterns, and fabrics to build your collection!
