How to Make Basic Taper Candles: 8 Steps
Candle making can be a relaxing and rewarding hobby. One of the easiest and most popular types of candles to make are basic taper candles. Follow these eight simple steps, and you’ll have beautifully crafted taper candles in no time.
Step 1: Gather Your Supplies
To make taper candles, you will need:
– Paraffin wax (or other preferred candle wax)
– Taper candle mold or a pair of dipping cans
– Candle wicks with a sustainer
– Thermometer
– Double boiler
– Large spoon, stirrer, or spatula
Step 2: Melt the Wax
Using a double boiler, melt the paraffin wax over medium to low heat. Be sure to monitor the temperature with a thermometer. Ideally, the wax should reach approximately 160°F (71°C) before proceeding to the next step.
Step 3: Prepare the Wick
While the wax is melting, prepare the wick by cutting it slightly longer than the desired length of your candle. Thread each end through a sustainer. (This increases stability and makes holding on to the wick while dipping much easier.)
Step 4: Add Color and Fragrance (Optional)
If you would like colored or scented taper candles, add dye chips or essential oils during this step. Stir gently until color or fragrance is evenly distributed.
Step 5: Set Up Your Molds or Dipping Cans
Either place your prepared wick in a taper candle mold or drape it over a rod positioned across two dipping cans filled with melted wax.
Step 6: Dip Your Candles
Hold onto each end of the wicked sustainer and slowly dip your wick into the melted wax several times. Allow each layer to cool slightly before dipping again. This process will build up layers of wax until your candle reaches the desired thickness.
Step 7: Smooth and Shape Your Candle
Once your candle has reached the desired size, smooth and shape it by rolling it gently on a flat surface. Be sure to do this while the wax is still relatively warm and pliable.
Step 8: Allow Your Candles to Cool and Harden
Place your finished taper candles in a safe, cool, and vertical position to allow them to cool completely. Once they have hardened, trim the wick to approximately 1/4 inch.
For added elegance, you can carve designs into the wax or add other embellishments. Now that you know how to make basic taper candles, feel free to experiment with various colors, scents, and unique designs. Happy candle making!
